You might want to find one of the national forums for such a question. To start though, do you have a lot of space in that back yard? I ask because it will be tall order for just a vine to help with noise from the highway. I would think a row of thick evergreens of some sort would be a better choice. That.s where space becomes an issue.

Thanks for your help. There is space in the backyard and already a taller evergreen tree line. I just want to cover the fence quickly so I don't have to see the cars, a thicker plant for sound barrier would be just a plus. Do you have any suggestions?

There's a guy from the Knoxville area who often posts in these forums. He is much more knowledgeable about types of trees and shrubs than I am. I think he works with landscape plantings. If he doesn't respond to this thread soon, It might be a good idea to post to the Landscape Design forum. Be sure to mention where you are, and maybe your hardiness zone. It's an active forum, and there are people who work with such concepts everyday.

As for the fence... I was thinking wooden fence. Yeah, chain links don't provide much for sight issues huh? Speaking of wooden fence though, that'd be nice. Bamboo grows fast, but it spreads. You'll have to control it. Same with most vines. Best case is to find a vine that is vigorous, but will mind it's space well. The problem with most plants, vines included, is that they die back, or lose leaves in Winter. Since it's sight and sound, whatever you choose, or ask about in the other forum there, let them know it needs to be evergreen, or at least have year round coverage. I don't like ivy myself, but perhaps for that purpose, it would be a good choice?

But don't hesitate to ask about both in the landscape forum. Posters there work with such ideas all the time, and will have more ideas than I.
