Squirrels and deer eating my tulips!

I've had no luck with planting my favorite flower, tulips, around the trunks of my three poplars. They start to come up beautifully in early spring and then I find the leaves are all chewed up. I'm lucky if any actually flower...maybe two or three survive. So I found out on this site that it's the squirrels and possibly the deer that we also have in our area, but no wild rabbits. So my question is: what other bulb or even perrenial flower can I plant around my poplars that won't attract squirrels or deer?
