Rick, mine seem to bloom summer and fall. Spring, TX.

There's hope yet! I usually put my hybrid amaryllis plants out in full (zone 6b) sun all summer, and after the indoors foliage burns off, the bulbs grow strong leaves, bulk up and do great. Can the papilios handle that much sun?

One of the larger plants has been sending offsets out to either side, which has severely distended the plastic 12" pot. Should I remove a few offsets, or get a bigger pot? I would rather not discourage potential flowering.

I have my Papilio bulb in a window with no direct sun light, it's rooting but nothing else and I was also wondering if it could take more sun and develop better.

My papilio will start to have two buds that will peek out of the neck of the bulb and then promptly abort them. It's never bloomed after the initial one shortly after I received it. I was warned that they were incredibly finicky and probably won't ever bloom again so I knew that ahead of time. Just sort of annoying to see buds just starting to peek out and then quit. The buds do their 'peeking' very late spring into early summer.

I thought the same thing too and I have a feeling it may be a particular clone. I had one for many years and it did the same thing so I got rid of it. A few years ago I picked up another one to give it a second chance and it flowered. I treat it the same as I did the older one and it blooms in late fall/early winter without fail. The only thing I did differently was to move it from an East window to a full sun South, window which it seems to like.

How do you think it would do outdoors in full sun all day? I know my hybrid amaryllis plants love it, but not so sure if papilio would. I'm thinking that papilios are epiphytic understory plants, used to bright shade or dappled sun at most?

I would not put papilios out in full sun. Dappled sun and or early morning or late afternoon sun at the most.

Is it usually possible to let the offset mature enough so that it might survive on its own? Maybe I should remove the offsets from h.leonardii sooner. I've never seen a hippeastrum produce that many babies! Lol

Fred, that didn't occur to me that it was the type of clone. I just figured it was something that was in their nature. I suppose I could try for another bulb to see if it's different or not.

Redbbeard, there are LOTS of folks on this site who would happily accept some of those H. Leonarii offsets!

I think my Papilios are at least a year from blooming. The bulbs are still fairly small. I'm hoping they will bulk up this summer. I'm trying them mounted, in net pots and in regular pots... just to see what they like best in my growing zone.
