Do you need doors? How about a folding screen that can be put up or taken away when you have company? Some things you can do yourself....take out the table, take down the chandelier, put art where the mirror is, and TV on the buffet if you are going to have one in there. Add comfortable furniture, a big toy box for a coffee table, books on some of the shelves and use baskets in the shelves for much loved toys like you have them until you can put doors on the bottoms of the shelves.

So sad to see this beautiful room going away!! Couldn't you just remove the table and rug and add a few bean bag chairs and soft carpets and keep the room as is to use again later when the kids are a bit older. Big rattan baskets could be used for toy chests.

I think it's great as-is (with the french doors added)! Adding a couch or lounge chairs will make it feel more den-like.

Keep the baskets for toy storage and add a stand alone desk with the chair back to the window. Or see if you can mod one side of the shelves to a desk similar to this:

Honestly, I think all it needs is different furniture to suit the room's new role.

Such a shame to loose this lovely dining room. Add the french doors & hire a carpenter to enclose the lower shelves with doors to hide toys when needed. Just have plain slab doors added to the same height as the center drawers & doors. They could be extended forward so they would be deeper for better toy storage.

The carpenter could also extend the top of the radiator cover to become a work surface/desk (leaving room for the lower door swing). Remove the mirror & add carpet squares by Flor in lively colors for a nice comfy floor surface for the little ones. The carpet squares can be removed when/if you wish to change it back to a dining room.

That is a nice dining room. I'd start filling the built-ins with books, and add a small sofa or maybe a few swivel chairs. I'd be afraid of having French doors in that area, with a little one running around.
