and why did you amend it ...

if its a pre existing water issue.. what did you amend the hole with??

you may have been on the right track .. planting high.. but not if you amended with a water retaining amendment ...

Since it's Hydrangeas you initially were after, maybe try a macrophylla type. All those that I've ever worked with have been right thirsty plants.

We have clay soil down here. I amended with a pine bark amendment sold by local high-quality nurseries (specifically to help deal with clay). I think the bigger issue is just how water drains in the yard and this spot is in the pathway, but not the lowest spot. There are hostas and hellebores growing happily next to it.

I would prefer a more woodland-style of plant, hence why I wasn't look at other types of hydrangeas besides oakleaf. Plus, they're extremely common down south and I've got some huge ones elsewhere in the yard.
