Great! Do you think it is the warm winter that brought this to bloom? My several small bougainvillea have bloomed for the first time in many years.

I'm not sure why it bloomed this year, but no freezing weather this winter probably helped! It is planted under a tall palm on the side of the house I don't visit on a daily or weekly basis, so I was surprised to see it.

In Hawaii, they are grown out in fields in full sun, but my friend had here little "pineapple plantation" planted on the east side of her house that only got morning sun and it bore many pineapples. She used to add lots of horse manure to it every year, so maybe that helped. I had one that I grew in a pot for many years, and even after I put it into the ground, it never fruited, but it did eventually die without putting out pups.

I wonder if they will bloom here in Gainesville. Anyone know?

Sure they will. You can always force them to flower if you want.

Well, you know I have to try to grow one. I'm incorrigible, and I have severe ZDD.

Try growing three. They don't flower in a single year, so that way, in the future, you can get at least one pineapple every year.

My advice is to just be patient. I've had luck with two in the last 2 years. It does take about 2 years to get a pineapple.

As a snowbird leaving for Pennsylvania soon, I probably won't see this ripen and I imagine the critters will get it. Sad but maybe we'll be full-time residents next year.

Aww...that's sad. I know you've been waiting a long time to be able to stay here. More likely, a neighbor will snag it, if that makes you feel any better.
