another esale rug question

We need some rugs for my DDs third floor space. It is one large open room. We need rugs for both looks and function. Ever since we took out the hot water rads and put in ducts for heating, the noise is really bad. We are hoping a couple of rugs helps.

I love the wool gabbeh rugs and thought maybe doing a round one and a rectangular in different colours would be nice. I also found the turkish one and think the colours may match the blue gabbeh, but would it be horrible to put a real wool rug with a polyproplyne rug? I am a huge snob about manmade products and all our furnishings, etc. are natural fabrics and even tho I love the rug, I have a feeling I may not be happy with anything with poly in its name.

For some weird reason, I can't seem to load pics of the rugs today, but here is the room. Please excuse the teenage mess.

I would not mix the two. I'd get either both polypropylene or both wool. I doubt the polypropylene would absorb much sound.

tibb, would you get two of the same colour wool? or same shape? or mix the gold and the blue? one round one rectangle?

I have a polypropylene rug in both my living and dining room which are open to one another. They make a big difference in dampening sound, based on how loud it was before I got them (hardwood floor).

Daisy I have several of the Gabbeh rugs from esales. I have the gold in a 9x13 in my LR. also a 16 ft gold runner in my entry. I like them but am moving the rugs to the guest room when it is ready. The gold is really a yellow gold very bright and might not look the best with the round poly you posted. I would definitely try the rectangle poly with the navy blue gabbeh.

The gabbeh rugs are very soft and have no backing and I do not have rug pads under and you will need them. I have 7 gabbeh rugs. I just have not gotten around to getting them yet.

There really is no way of knowing until you try out the rugs together in your rooms. Easy to do with their return policy. It wouldn't bother me to have the mix of poly and the gabbeh because one is plain and one is patterned.

Glad linelle corrected me on the sound dampening effects of the polypropylene rugs.

Daisy, I'd probably get two rectangular rugs, same maker but different patterns.

I cannot recommend the #2 Oriental rug, which looks very similar to one that I ordered, put on the floor and immediately rolled up to return. The intricate pattern for some reason looks terrible, very indistinct and cheap-looking. On the other hand, a tribal gabbeh which had virtually no pattern, just large differently colored areas, looks fine and is still on my kitchen floor.

That is all very helpful advice. I just realized I have an extra jute rug that is natural with a bit of blue woven through it. I think a larger rectangular blue gabbeh will go nicely with it. Ideally, I'd get something similar to the oriental rug except in real wool. Budget will absolutely not allow that, but I think the gabbeh will be nice.

Your ideas sound good, daisy, and I wonder if an Oriental wouldn't be a bit too serious for a girl's room, anyway.

I've always loved those Grandin Road rugs! And I love the cat photo bombing, Daisychain.

Well, she's almost 17 so her tastes are pretty much the opposite of whatever I suggest ;)

Just kidding - but she is a total hipster and loves the bohemian look and natural fabrics like her mom (oddly, my 11 year old loves anything from Walmart and the more poly in it the better). She's away for a week, but I'll show her the grandinroad rugs when she gets back. She does love florals.

Well if she likes the bohemian look I would look at something with lots of color and/or pattern. I don't know what colors she likes, but maybe something like this . . .

IMO, the first two are too 'grown up' for a 17 year old. I love the one TRose posted and it has a young, hip vibe, I wouldn't get solid either as it will show every thread, dust bunny, dirt mark, as well as fur from the precious kitty. ;)

If you want that look for that price, you'll have to go polypropylene. Tufted is made from wool but latex glue is used to glue to wool to a backing and a machine punches a design. It is not natural at all. The only natural way to make a rug is by hand knotting. and you'll have to multiply that price by ten to get a hand knotted rug in the design of the first rug.
