Improve curb appeal

What should we do to improve our curb appeal of this 1948 stone cape cod-ish style home?

Any ideas? Portico? Landscaping or walkway? Any insight is much appreciated.

Where do you live? It will help to know so we can suggest plants for your yard.

Nice house! How do you access the front door? Looks like a great candidate for added landscape with some color and a stone walkway.

Thanks for the responses! We live on a corner lot and the current walkway goes from the front door to the side street and the driveway on the same side (see attached pic). Does it make sense to add another walkway to the front street and have two walks? We live in Ohio. Thanks

If that is your main door, it definitely makes sense to add another walkway! Otherwise, you could put a patio w/ a cover or trellis, and put tall shrubs and other flowers around it.

I know the photo isn't of a traditional trellis, but I think it would look best.

*all assuming this will fit in your budget*

It's a great looking house. You could and an arbor or pergola over the main entry, but I think that a nice wide stone walkway, straight or curvy, and some plantings of hydrangeas, azaleas or some other flowering, naturally shaped shrubs in garden islands here and there would add interest. You might also add low stone posts with an open gate at the sidewalk, and a bench near the door. You could also add a few Japanese maples for higher color and interesting form.

Also, some solar or low-voltage lighting could be added along the path...low enough to just brush some light across the walk.

It's a handsome house. My first thought was that the landscaping seems kind of weak.

I'd look at larger and more foundation plantings that give more oomph to anchor the corners of the house. I would definitely have more of walk or arrival pad in front of the front door. It doesn't have to go straight out to the street in front, but something should be there to mark the entry. It looks like you have something there, but it doesn't look very well defined. That could also be a place to put large containers or plantings with a more 'formal' shape.

I think you might also consider another color for the front door - to make it pop a bit.

No - not necessary to have a new path straight out to the street. What I was trying to suggest was more space dedicated to pavers to match the scale of the home. So a curved paver zone encompassing the tree and right back to the driveway. So this becomes a whole new (much) wider walkway. I'll try to draw an approximation of what I mean and post.
