Oleg, Your Clown is very different from mine. At one time I had two that I had bought at different times under the name of Clown and one was triangular like yours and the other had more rounded flowers. It is this round one that I still have although it hasn't bloomed in the past two years, maybe this year...

And then there was Toronto which was also triangular and Popov which was triangular too, which at one time I had. I think there may be different clones of this older variety of Clown, which I just love. The flowers on mine were huge also although I don't have a measurement.

Yours seems a bit more to the pink side of red but that may just be the photo. I've had mine since 2009!

on amaryllis.com photo Clown and flower shape triangular. The color of my flower paler because blooms in warm room and it is not enough light. I doubt on your photo ...

Oleg, You may be correct that mine isn't the true Clown but as I haven't a clue to what it could be other than what it came labeled as I'll continue to call it Clown. I particulariy love the fact that it is round and the crisp white shows off the striking red stripes with little bleeding into the white.

If anyone has a guess other than Clown... I'll take it under consideration!!☺☺☺Donna

Oleg, I just Googled Sydney images and I think you're right!! Yes, some of the pictures differ a bit but the overall shape and coloration matches and the flowers are all round in shape. I'll change the name tag!! Thanks.....

Hi Donna, I have to agree. My Sydney shows a clear difference in colour from the outer parts of the stripes (orange-red) to the inner parts, the "fishbone"-markings in deep-red. I'll show a picture once it's flowering, which is soon!

This is one reason I like the amaryllis flower. It's large, and there are about 4 of them usually. It does last a while but still not as long as I'd like it do. However, I am a fan of the leaves, so it's good to see that being green all up until frost (compared to possibly some other bulb flowers).

So one of the best things is that you collect more and more over the years, or the ones you have multiply, so that you'll just get more and more of these blooms to enjoy when they do start.

There are varieties of some varieties. Clown, blossom peacock, etc... Mainly because of different purchasing channels. Even different dutch suppliers sometimes provide different varieties.

The large > 7 inch and extra large > 8 inch flowers in the garden get the attention of almost every one

I can not agree with your opinion, as the variety from hippeastrum - a single plant vegetative propagation, currents have a clone.

Confusion in varieties - it is another thing, it has nothing to do with varieties accuracy.

But... don't you think that a variety which is propagated by tissue culture might have the chance to produce some aberrations which wouldn't be apparent until they were bloomed out? Basically the same but perhaps very slight differences? Although I don't know how many of these popular box store varieties use tissue culture as their method of propagation...if at all. Just a thought....Apple Blossom comes to mind as in the past I have had two different types of Apple Blossom and there were slight differences in the blooms and one was even fertile one time for me.

Yes, it happens, but very rarely. This phenomenon is called "bud mutation".
But remember the saying of the Romans -"Exceptio probat regulam" "exception to the rule that proves the rule".

At present, the diameter of the flower Clown is 19 cm. (near 8 inches ).
