Sounds great! I've never divided mine, a lot of them self seed. It's good to know this can be done successfully.

sherrygirl, it may depend on your zone, but in my short experience, and from what I have read, when they start struggling and getting smaller they should be divided. I lost several last summer, so I decided it was time. There are some good youtube vidieos on divisions. Debra

When mine get all scraggly and lanky, I divide them and also replant them, discarding the naked stalks, and it works really well. I've had no problems at all.

I have about a 50% success rate.

Would you divide the ones below? They h looked great last summer but it's got a lot of corns above the ground now. I did another one last weekend - my first time, but i just feel like I'm hurting them instead of helping them...

Serendipity, is that last Heuchera Hercules? Mine looked a lot like that in a year or two. I have not divided it yet but I think it is time.

Yes it's Hercules....it was so nice last year. I did divide the one in the bottom pic but the pieces ended up being so small I'm still waiting to see if they take or not.

serendipity, I dug up my Hercules last night, took off a few shoots and planted them up for our Horticulture Society sale next spring. Then I dug deep and buried the rest of the plant to the level of the new shoots. I am hoping this will work.

When I broke my plant up it was more like the ones you have in the pots...I didn't really have any big healthy pieces...maybe I left it too long before I did it. I planted the small pieces directly back into the ground. They haven't died yet but are still a little on the iffy side. I am crossing my fingers!

That is encouraging. My Paris was pathetic and I figured the only chance was to dig it up and try and save a few shoots today. Not looking great but I really had nothing to lose.

How is your Hercules doing Barb? Mine still look like the ones in your little pots but definitely have a new shoot here and there. I am going to try another one this weekend. I dug up and just replanted another heuchera as it was deeper, as it was out of the ground and not looking healthy at all. It seemed to like that as it is doing much better and with better colour!
