Growing from Seed

Cotton from seeds

I'm not an expert gardener but I do manage to keep some plants alive :) . I am looking into growing cotton to make into yarn. I haven't been able to find any cotton plants to purchase and not sure I want to start them from seeds. Anyone have any experience growing cotton from seeds? How easy/difficult is it? TIA!

I'm in SC. I know cotton growth is heavily regulated. I'm not looking to grow a huge field just a few plants.

I lived in SC for many years. Cotton is was, and maybe still is, so regulated that hobby/backyard growers aren't allowed to grow any. Not even "just a few plants".

I had to jump through numerous hoops in order to get approval to grow a couple of rows of historical Sea Island cotton for educational purposes. Once approved, my little crop was inspected by uniformed officials on numerous occasions.

To obtain details about the legalities, call your local Clemson Extension office and ask about planting a little bit of cotton. If it is legal, they might have information about where to get seeds. You will never find plants for sale in SC.
