We have the same dilemna. We are refinishing half of our house which has up to 12' planks. We went to several local hardwood stores and they can order unfinished planks in bundles that come between 7' and 10' in length in red oak. There is of course a surcharge for the longer planks. The floor will be installed and then finished.

Prefinished flooring comes in random lengths anywhere from 12"-84" depending on manufacturer. The better grade flooring you choose like Clear Grade which is top of the line, more chances you will have longer pieces and you will have a more uniform color.

If you looking for all long pieces, like Snoopy said, you will pay a lot extra because it becomes a custom milled product and it will be unfinished material.

If you are looking for a high quality floor, look to a flooring business, not a big box store. Almost anything is available if you are willing to pay but you may be surprised that the price premium isn't very high. Dealing with a specialist firm may cost more dollars up front but is often a better value.

Recently I bought the end of a lot from a local specialty supplier that was long lengths - mostly 8-10 feet. The price was probably 10-15% higher but the material is high quality and the yield will be better so total price was no more. Also, the material is higher quality so will be easier to install and less work to sand which means it may well end up to be a lower total cost and a better quality floor.
