Bereft - devastated! RC Not shipping to Canada

Royal Colors announced their spring sale, and I discovered much to my dismay, they are not shipping to Canada anymore! I am totally crushed. I will be stuck with endless Red Lions from the local grocery store :(

I'm sorry, I know how left out you must feel. Did RC give a reason?

guess it might be due to the many frozen bulbs during shipping LOL At least few people encounter such prob.

But seriously, ask them. They're always responding to me when I leave a msg though their form

I know exactly how you feel, Telos does not ship to Spain

anna_in_quebec Do not despair)) eventually we find something that we want elsewhere. Do not lose hope, and look!

    Best wishes,

    Elena.

I understand RC in this matter. A seller does not monitor all the temperatures all over the world. Their responsibility is to ship out paid goods asap(which is what most buyers want). NOW, I think that if there is danger for frost, customers need to inform the sellers so that shipment can be delayed. One can pay the items and have them shipped in a later date. RC might consider this with regards to your matter Anna. I have clivia seeds paid by my buyers in Finland and Russia last January which I am just shipping now for the safety of the seeds.

I have been ordering from RC for years now - no problems whatsoever. The Canadian website clearly states hipps are amongst allowable plants:

The Horticulture Plant List is a list of plants that may be imported from all countries other than the continental United States with the following standard requirements:

    • A Permit to Import is required.
    • A Phytosanitary Certificate is required.
    • The plants must be free from pests, soil and soil-related matter and are subject to inspection upon arrival in Canada.

Maybe some over-eager inspector was messing things up? It clearly says hipps are allowed. Besides, all sorts of bulbs come to Canada from various European countries!

By the way, Daphne from RC kindly did respond to my questions, and will be looking into it - I hope.

@Elena - unfortunately, that is why I ordered so much from RC - there is next to nothing available on the Canadian scene - and US does not ship here. Within Canada, It goes from same old Red Lion, to uber-expensive bulbs from certain sellers, which are nowhere near as large or good in quality as RC.

@Maria - never ever over all these years have I received frozen bulbs, or had any issues at all.

You are lucky but how about RC's other customers in Canada? There "could" be several situations with other Canadian customers receiving frozen bulbs and RC has to replace them. That sucks for a seller. If I was RC though, I would not totally stop shipping to Canada and keep my old customers who are happy with what they receive. Anything is "workable" if both parties would agree on a possible solution.

Well, there is an easy and logical solution - don't ship to certain zones after a specific date.

it is really frustrating to see something online and there's no possibility to have it shipped.. have you asked telos? maybe they ship to canada, they have a good variety. I apparently live in one of three countries they do not ship to.. :( i have sent a message to amarillys&caladium but haven't gotten an answer yet wether they ship to europe or not, still waiting to find out.. I'll cross my fingers that RC starts shipping to you again ;)

I checked out Telos: too complicated and costly. $65 just for the phyto certificate, then other fee for cleaning. RC never has charges like this, and shipping was quite reasonable (for a hipp junkie!)

Netherlands mostly exports their produce/products so they have easier and cheaper processing for phytosanitary permits and inspection. Their government has to do this to keep their costs down and products sellable to other countries. USA is different. It is quite hard to get a phytosanitary permit here as one has to drive far to a Plant inspection station to bring the plants to be inspected. Believe me it is not just a couple of blocks away. Here in Virginia, the nearest Plant Inspection center is 405 miles/651 kilometers away! Gas and time costs $. This is also the very main reason why a lot of US bulb companies/nurseries do not export plants as it is too much trouble. So if you find one that is willing to do it and charging for it, be grateful!

by strange coincidence just received my bunch from RC today. Just let them know everything looks fine and Daphne replied like an hour later. So really Anna just mail them and ask. address is: mail (at) royalcolors.com

On completely unrelated matter, they say before planting, place the bulbs in a container filled with lukewarm water for a couple of hours to encourage root formation... Anyone doing that?

Michal, if you scroll up you will read I have emailed RC and talked to Daphne.
