I agree with christaboyd, no looming cabinetry next to the fireplace. If anything maybe some floating shelves.

It is time to accept the truth and just remove that out of place mis-matched cabinet. If you are worried about an empty space, how about floor lamp behind that chair and remove the one off the table next to the chair which is off scale.

HI -- The cabinet looks like kitchen doors . If you can put some china cabinet doors on that have glass or that are antique ones that are like the style of the cabinet on the right .Full height doors . Then have it in the weathered wood or painted white . Paint the mantel the same white . Then have the re-claimed or ship lap wood on the wall . Then a mirror like the ones at Restoration Hardware with the round raw wood frame or the ones that look like zinc metal or the antiqued old brass . The bigger mirror over the mantel will balance with the side cabinet . That should make for a very stylish wall .

OK timeandtruth, since we got you running around... If that is a TV over the mirrored door cabinet, then how about removing some of the memento's on top the cabinet. Looks like they obstruct the TV viewing??
