As long as you understand that it isn't required for any reason then you can do it anytime after the plant develops its second set of true leaves - pinch just above them. A more effective approach is to plant the seeds in clusters rather than singles.

Also keep in mind that there are over 100+ varieties of 'basil'. The growth pattern is very different for different varieties so without knowing which variety you are growing it is difficult to recommend pinching it at all.

Thanks Dave for replying. I'm growing Ocimum Basilicum-a sweet basil from Burpee. I love pesto and decided to grow my own basil. I'm so used to pinching that I just assumed I should. Will this one branch without it?

Once you start harvesting you'll be pinching anyway.

Ocimum Basilicum is common Sweet Basil. So did you grow just a single stem of it, a single plant? If so and you want plenty for pesto then you need to plant much more. No it does not branch on its own normally as it is a tall, woody stem variety. That's why it is grown in clusters of plants rather than as single stems.

As floral said it will branch as you harvest but if you wait until then it will be quite tall and lanky.

Oh I have about 30 plants coming along. Large seeds and germinates so easily. I pinched the tallest one and will pinch the rest. I know...lots more than I need. :) Will definitely be giving them away. Thanks for your input everyone.

I start harvesting quite early on, just taking a few leaves to begin with. The plants aren't lanky at that point.
