Ceiling Heights

Help! We need some design opinions. We are building a home and thought that our design was a 9ft ceiling that opened up to an 11 ft ceiling in the great room (kitchen and living room). We just had the trusses set and instead we have an 11ft ceiling half way through the kitchen and then a vault! My husband is starting to like the vault but I'm worried that the 3 different ceiling heights will look choppy. We have 3 options- 1. Leave it 2. Extend the 11 ft ceiling to the rest of the kitchen and just have a vaulted living room or 3. Extend the 11 ft across the whole great room. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

How high is the vaulted portion to be?

My guess is about 20 ft at the high point.

how cold is your climate...having spent last weekend at our vacation home (fully insulated, is suitable(?) for year round home) the high ceilings really eat up the heat. i'm glad we're rarely there in winter. the more cold weather you have, the more appealing no vault is.

Here's the thing - if you are going to do 20' it needs to have some reason - some clerestory windows or architectural timbering inside or it is just a big box that will throw off the proportions of the room - what is the overall dimension of the room - is it at least 20' wide and longer? When a room is higher than it is wide and long it feels uncomfortable to the people inside ..

Also - a 20 foot peak / slope to 11 or 12 is a different feel than just 20 flat and high .. maybe go find a hotel and stand in some spaces with different ceiling heights ..

Thank you for the input. I hadn't thought about the heating issue. And I do worry about having a very big empty wall to decorate.

With a 20 foot vaulted area you could use that space as attic or a loft if you decide to keep your ceilings at 11 feet..........That leaves you with a room with a ceiling height of 8 feet up there..........Think about how you might use that space ..........

Well, you don't have to decorate to the ceiling, but I can tell you, from having various floors open into one another, that it wreaks havoc with your HVAC goals!
