Paneling

We are purchasing a 1970's Swiss Chalet home. Very few updates have been done. There is paneling in the large slant ceiling living room. Has anyone successfully painted these with the end result polished and updated? Would it be better to just take the paneling down and replace with drywall? Advise would be appreciated.

It is such a personal choice. Do you like it? Do you want to live with it?

I personally feel bad painting over good wood paneling but I don't want to live surrounded by such a strong design statement.

I think, depending on what furniture and style you will have going on in that room, I would sand off any finish and then stain it to a color that works with my furnishings. In other words, update the look without losing the beauty of the wood.

Is there lots of other wood in the room? If yes, I would paint. the grooves in the wood would give interest.
