Also Marble Falls Nursery apparently carries a reasonable facsimile of bark fines or mini bark nuggets in bulk. Or they did at one time :-)

Otherwise, look at any product labeled as a 'soil conditioner', reptile bedding (sold in pet stores) or small orchid bark. Often these types of bark products are not commonly sold through the box stores but are available at better nurseries and garden centers.

I would also ask if your better local garden center could order any Fafard products (SunGro Horticulture) for you. Their 3B professional growing mix is about ideal. Or Fox Farm's Ocean Forest potting soil.

Whatever, I would not use that potting soil in the photo without serious modification.

Thanks gardengal, yes I saw all those brands as well, but can't seem to find anyone locally who sells them or anything like it. All the soil conditioners I've seen around here seem to be something other than aged pine bark/fines. I'll look into the Fafard products.

I've found that I've had the most luck looking for "Soil Conditioner" rather than "Pine Bark Fines". The latter is really more of a DESCRIPTION than an actual product. Also a pine bark mulch NOT labeled "nuggets" or "mini-nuggets"...but you'll probably be in for a bit of screening to remove larger pieces and dust.

You can get many fafard/sungro products from Brite Ideas Hydroponics which has at least 2 locations in Austin.

Just go to any pet store and by some "reptibark"

you have to contact your local landscaping supplier.

Landscaping supply yards rarely - if ever - sell anything remotely suitable for a container potting mix. I wish it were quite that simple :-)
