River Rock around my Crimson Queen?

I am re-landscaping around my pool area and I would like to put River Rock around my maple trees but I am concerned that they might get too hot being in full sun. I planted them last spring and they survived fine. Would I be better off planting flowers under the maples? Will River rock keep the ground cooler or hotter? Thanks for any advise!
