Depends on the species of orchid, some never produce keikis, some rarely, and some all the time. Some keikis are loved, others are just a pest.

Or, in case with dendrobiums, when they want to bloom but conditions are not adequate they will transform buds to keiki. My dendr. loddigesii does it all the time.
