how to plant Liriope question...

Hello,

This is probably going to seem like a very silly question, but something I've pondered. I have a very steep hill that grass can't really grow on well. It erodes away more every time it rains, especially with it being clay soil. I plan on planting the entire hill with Liriope Muscari. When I go to plant them......do I plant each plant to where it's sticking straight up and down, or do I want to plant the roots the same contour as the hill, as in going more horizontally as the hill slopes down?

First of all, if the slope is very steep, Liriope may not be the best choice at all. But if you are planting it for a groundcover, you want L. spicata, not L. muscari. Your concerns about how to plant them are not really important. The plants, if they survive, will straighten themselves out.

Without knowing your zone or if the hill is sun or shade it's impossible to give any further advice.

The hill gets a mix of sun and shade. East side of house. But back yard has numerous sweet gum trees that provide shade when the sun is angled right.

I would be afraid that spicata would growing into my yard where I don't want it to. Doesn't it just keep spreading forever?

Yes, the hill is steep. I can't really give a pitch estimate on it. I thought Liriope was supposed to be awesome for erosion control, especially on steep banks, and that they can survive most any conditions. That's why I wanted to go with it.

What about vinca minor? Would that be a better solution? I think we already have it growing on the other side (north side) of the house, also on a steep hill, and it doesn't really seem to creep into the main lawn. It stays pretty well contained to the hill.

Regular Mondo Grass? I don't want to screw this up....too much money and time invested to have to redo it if I choose the wrong plant.
