Need climbing vine advice

Hi everyone! Hubby and I moved to a new home last fall... a home that has my dream garden. It's beautiful, but now that spring is here I find myself at a complete loss as to how to handle the climbing vines. I live in zone 3, so winters are very cold, and all the plants (including the vines) died. Not abnormal, as they're all perennials so are now starting to grow back. Well... all but the vines. They're just a TON of dead leaves and vines right now. I didn't prune them in the fall, as I was worried doing so would destroy their growth. However, I wrongly assumed they'd just spring back to life after winter, as they're still completely dead looking. No idea what to do and no idea what species of vine they are. Anyone have any tips? Is it normal for vines to be SO dead and then turn green (they were green when we moved in before they began to die with winter's arrival)? Any help is SO appreciated.. I'm stumped!
