soil choice for zone 24 container bog no drainage

April 12, 2016

My 36/18/12" deep container pond was fun last year until the mosquitoes (raccoons ate fish) and the algae (marimo balls helped some). Plus I was away too much in summer to keep topped up.

I have a dwarf papyrus and a horsetail and a tiny fern that survived. Do I have to use peat or can I just go mud?

Mostly indirect light but for noon sun.

I ended up just dumping in bark to hide the 3" of water at bottom with plants kept in original pots. Tried moss on top but that didn't make it.

Horsetail Papyrus and fern are plugging along...

What other plants should I try in there?

Will the decomposing bark cause trouble down the road?
