My Knock Outs

last modified: 10 years ago

I know, I know, I took the easy way out with roses. Sue me, just please don't rat me out on the Rose forum. :D

But man, I love these things. I wish I could find yellow ones, too. Yesterday:

(The last one was made with an app on my phone.)

They do make a statement, don't they?

There are yellow Knock Out roses; I once stopped at an insurance office to ask if I could take cuttings from their "antique roses" & if they knew the name, & they said, "sure. & the name is Knock Out."

    LOL!

Ha! And ohhh, I must find some! I have a long picket fence (background in one of the pics), and want to plant yellow ones in front of it, with some evergreens.

After I posted, and the thread stayed silent, I thought, welp, that's it. I'm kicked out of the club now for having Knock Outs. No one here will ever speak to me again. :D

ETA: Looks like they're called Sunny Knock Outs. Why am I just finding this out?! Beautiful:

Don't expect to be "kicked out", MizGG, most of us are firm believers in what Desi Arnaz said to Lucy ................."to itch, his own" !!! Whatever is your fancy is exactly what you should grow............best of luck with it !!

    LOL! Thanks, Carrie! :D

I do have one other rose bush (3 colors on one bush), but it's really looking bad this year. It's about 12 yrs old now, I'm not sure what's going on with it. In it's hayday:

....just please don't rat me out on the Rose forum.

They're beautiful!!..... so, why exactly would they earn you a bad rep with the RF?

    Just call me clueless.... <:-I

Hahahahha!!! I'm new to gardening and roses as well and had no clue what a bad rap they get these Knock outs!! on the rose forum. Yours are gorgeous. I have people stop and ask me what i do to mine all the time because they are attention grabbers!! I think if you take care of them and give them the same love as other roses, they look stunning!!!

I'm not sure where in texas you are buy my Lowe's has yellow KO's for sale.

these are the two i own that get lots of attention.

They are beautiful roses! I love the border with the ornamental trees and the mailbox planting too.

I found the sunny yellow knock outs at Lowe's a few years ago and killed them within a month, not sure what happened, they just languished away ;-(

I got my money back because that is what Lowe's does but I haven't tried them again.

Knock Outs get a 'bad rap' among the rose society people because they are too easy to grow ... LOL . It's supposed to be difficult to grow pretty roses so only the 'experts' can show them off. All the roses pictured above are gorgeous!!! More power to them.

Guess what I just came home with?? Looking for a spot for it. I think it's calling for me to dig a new flower bed. :D I'm so excited! Sure hope it flowers as much as the pink and red ones.

MizGG, are you in the df/w metroplex? If so, where did you find the yellow KO?

Linda, yes, I'm just west of Ft Worth, and found this at our local Lowe's. It was one of two left, must be popular!

I always bring some K Os inside, can't wait for the yellow. :)

Thanks. I'll be stopping at my Lowe's on my way home from work. My red KOs are blooming beautifully this year also.

WalMart has some of the yellow knock outs, too. Same brand as what Lowe's carries.

    First bloom today!

I'm going to keep it in a container this summer, on the patio, and transplant next season. I want to plant some trailing things with it ... maybe asparagus fern or rose moss. I usually do potato vines in this pot, but am wanting a different look with the KO.

They can say what they want about Knockouts, but I love them!!! I have them planted along the back fence and they grow tall enough to cover the fence and give wonderful color with no effort. I don't even have to fight blackspot or aphids like I do on my Austins. They came through the Austin area drought with flying colors and have held up to the flooding rains. I will plant them at my new house that we are building. So we can make our own Knockout Club if we get kicked from the rose forum...LOL

    LOL, Charin! I'm in!

Next up ... Lady Banks for my picket fence. I think I'll put it in the middle, and hope it will grow in each direction. Or, should I plant it more to the far right? I'm wanting it to grow more towards the house.

MizGG, it might take more than one, that's a lot of fence. I plan on a Munstead on one side of my fence at the new house and I'm leaving one side of my backyard for my Austin bed. I do love them, but they are a lot of work here where we get wet and then blistering heat. The Lady Banks will make a beautiful backdrop.

User thanked charintx (z 8b, central Texas)

Thanks! I could plant one on the corner (far right in pic, yard slopes down), and one farther to the left. I was going to do KOs in front, but I think I'd like something vining instead. :)

MissGG lady banks would be beautiful on your fence and one might cover that fence apparently they get really really big. I have one on my arbor and let me tell you this is year 3 and it just exploded!!!
Many have said it'll outgrow the arbor. We will wait and see I guess. Mine came from lowes!

I understand that the allure of knockouts is the ease that they grow. BUT god there are so many of them. I drove into town and it is like there are no other roses than knockouts. They have taken over and all the other roses have dissappeared.

.... apparently they (Lady Banks) get really really big.

In a spot where they're happy, even that can be an understatement (see World's Largest Rosebush...). We had one that mostly languished espaliered on a south facing brick wall while another "ate" our south-side fence in about a decade.... well, it actually kept eating the walk next to the fence which is why we eventually removed it. Think they would be beautiful in the open space you can provide.

I grow other roses, wantonamara, but they take a lot more care in Central Texas. With the rain, heat, bugs, etc., I'm always doing something to the other roses. They are worth the effort, but for continuous bloom and ease of care, you can't beat Knockouts.

Oooo, alameda! Those all sound great, I didn't know of so many different types! I'd love to see your barn ones. We used to have horses, and I miss them so much. Do you ride often? I lost my first husband to cancer, and had to sell our horses, tack, trailers, everything. Sure hope to ride again someday.

I realize I'm a bit late to this thread, but we actually have a mature Lady Banksia and while she is gorgeous this time of year, I feel certain she would eat that picket fence for lunch and follow it up with that arbor for dessert. :D Ours was planted too close to a 4 foot chain link fence but instead of growing on the fence, it cascades into the yard six or seven feet rendering a clothesline maybe five or six feet away from the root base almost completely unusable. I'm sure the previous owners didn't know what the mature growth habit would be. Still I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the garden!

Years ago I planted KO's after a remodel when I had two large areas on each side of the sidewalk to fill in. Talk about putting on a show!

The tangerine rose in the forefront is a Floribunda and it grows like a weed. I don't fertilize any of my Roses.

The pink Roses to the left of the picture are Carpet Roses that I actually bought from QVC. Also grows like a weed.

In the background of this picture, I now have a row of more KO's along a fence line, including a yellow, which takes a lot longer to grow and bloom, IMO, and also three climbing Roses. I'll take a picture of them later, you can see the beginning of it in the back, far left.

It's nice to be able to put flowers in pots now instead of the ground. I do want more Floribunda's though.

This picture was tasken in 2012, and they're much bigger now.

The Carpet Roses on the left side are always the last to bloom, but boy they sure are beautiful when they do!

This is what the flowerbeds looked like in 2012. Amazing! And before porch furniture. :)

Gorgeous roses, Oakley! And yes, amazing before/after pics!

I love all the wide open spaces around you, do you own the land? I so miss living on a ranch ... at my age now, my dream is to have about 5 acres .... with a designated yard, and the rest planted with wildflowers. Bliss. :)

Because this really is my very favorite plant in the garden, for anyone interested in Lady Banks here's a couple of pictures of one that is at least 15 years old. :) It's at the end of bloom season, so not as pretty as a few weeks ago, but this is after it was cut back pretty heavily last summer into kind of a ball shape- maybe by 1/3? For size reference the fence is 6ft and all the stuff on the upper right hand side is new growth just from the last two or three months. The white thing at an angle near the ground in the second pic is a very cute metal arbor I'm guessing it was planted on. :o We can only use the last two lines of the laundry line - but at least we got that. She used to draped all over that, too! LOL

We bought 2 acres from a wheat farmer a long time ago. My son and his family built a house on the next acre. The part of the house in the picture is a new addition we built. DH did grow wildflowers a few years ago, but they are really hard to grow! Isn't that strange? They did really good though, just too much work.

But Knock Outs are the only Roses some of us can grow, speaking for myself only. MizGG, are the ones in the 'vase' red or deep pink? The red Geraniums in the front yard get too much sun and I would like to replace them with red KO. I have pink in the back yard and they're doing great. How often do you cut them back? When mine have fully bloomed, and I haven't seen new blooms by 2 weeks, I cut them back 8"-10" and they fully rebloom, all year. I do this 3-4 times during the year. I also want to keep them shorter, not at their maximum height.if only they smelled like *real* roses, but I don't miss the thorns'!

    User thanked patty Vinson

Patty, mine are deep pink. I'd like to get some red for sure! I cut mine back exactly as you do yours.

So, update on my yellow one in the pot--it's not doing well at all. No blooms, and looking very unhappy. I'm going to find a spot in the yard for it.

Ditto, zippity1. Lemon Fizz smell great and blooms very frequently!

I have surprise visitors....We took out 2 knockouts to put in a concrete pad for a shed. Then plans changed and we are building a new house so didn't buy the shed. I put 2 new knockouts further along the fence away from the new pad and was out looking at them today and discovered the knockouts that were removed are back. I guess they wanted to stay. If only my Austins were so persistent.

Thank you teacups! Where did you purchase yours? I should probably try to get them in by the weekend since rain is scheduled in Austin.

They are listed on Antique Rose Emporium website ,even though they are not an antique. But sold out right now. I got mine probably 7 years ago at a local nursery but I haven't seen it again.

Sorry - I also don't like Knockouts. I prefer the big patent roses like Don Juan, Mr. Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy. Has anyone heard about a fungus affecting roses? Someone told me last year not to buy any roses for at least two years.

This is blushing ko from Chamblees, I didn't prune at all this year due to laziness. But look at her though. She's one of last roses that hasn't been affected by rrd.

I definitely need some Blushing KO's for the Rose hedge I'm planting.

If you want a fast growing and easy Rose like KO's to grow, try Carpet Roses aka Rose Carpet.

I took this picture this morning but we had a hard rain during the night. They bloom profusely all summer and all you have to do is water them.

The carpet rose is in front, the KO's are behind them. I whacked a couple of feet off the CR's a month ago. They get really wide.

I think you'll get a big picture if you click on them.

This is the Rose hedge I'm planting. I like that it can be seen when someone is coming up the road. Notice my yellow KO's in the middle? They aren't very showy and they turn almost white in the sun. Not impressed so far because they're five years old.

The tree branches weren't that long last year so I need to cut them back.

I will still take my knockouts. With Mother Nature being bipolar this year, all my Austins have black spot, no matter how much I have trimmed, sprayed, or whatever. If I had them planted in the front of my house it would look like twig city. Don't get me wrong I love my Austins, but for being able to handle the wild Texas weather, knockouts can't be beat and I always get compliments on how pretty they are.

Oakley, my yellow KOs don't do as well as the pink and reds even though they are planted next to each other. Must be something about the color.

Oakley....or anyone who is taking a break from weeding, planting, or crying. I only mention the crying since after working so veeeeery hard on various yard plantings, they've up and died on me. Lack of seasonal drought wasn't the issue, as my water bill can attest to. Now what was I leading up to.....oh yeah.....Oak, is the Rose Carpet the same as Drift Roses(like KO, probably not REAL Roses, so shoot me now! What I have look very similar, but they are pink and are going 'agro', as said by my son. It means they're doing very well. Again, no pretty Rose scent. The ones behind the DR(pink in color also, but the name escapes me!)have a fungus and I recently cut them back, hoping to eradicate the problem. Any suggestions as to what I need to do will be greatly appreciated. When I do get blooms, they are very fragrant, but it's very 'thorny'. I could use HELP in every aspect of gardening in Austin! I was born in the midwest, and my gardens were something I could be proud of, even my wildflower garden. With a move to San Diego years later, I was still able to contend with the horrific soil, and my plants all flourished. However, here in Austin, the weeds do better than the plants, and i've succeeded with quite a variety. As much as I love to garden, i've just about given up. ;(

Patty Vinson, I would start your own thread and ask for info. You will get more help that way. I would include a vague area of where you are at in the city, and a description of your soil. Austin is at the conjunction of three eco regions and the soil changes drastically in the city even with in the different eco regions. I am in the fracture Zone of the Edwards Plateau now. I used to be on the change of Backland Prairie to Balcones Fault area of the VERY beginnings of the Edwards Plateau. What works for one area does not work for another. I have lived in two areas of Austin and they could not be more different.

Wantonama, thank you so very much! Still new here after 8 years and I did not know that.....interesting. I know I have a lot of calichi(sp)as I was told by the builder. I had 2 trees rot from the inside out, so it must be the soil. Do you know of any service which tests the soil in the Austin area? I won't plant another tree until I have this done. Thanks again. ;)
