Are you Australia? Tulips are planted in the Autumn normally. I doubt a week will hurt the tulips but it's being April already might.

I'm in the southern US. They were a great price, but they have to be chilled before I can plant them in the autumn.

They will have to chill for 10-12 weeks is what I have been reading. I didn't realize they were fall bulbs when I got them-tulips are one thing I have never planted. I wonder if I should keep them chilled until fall?

You can keep them in a dry spot. Don't let them get wet or moist and or they may start growing. Then you can save them until fall and plant directly in the ground. Then they'll get the natural chill of the fall/winter and bloom beautiful for you in the spring.
