Thanks, but dill can be antagonistic to some plants. I just wanted to make sure that runner bean wasn't one of them. I love dill as well and plant it throughout the garden and let a bunch of it flower for the beneficial insects (but not the ones near my tomatoes).

I'd be interested in the actual proof of the antagonism. I know it's bruited about by companion planters but it just gets repeated without ever any supporting evidence.

Me, too. Or at least an explanation of the mechanism, which I can't seem to find anywhere on the great wide Internet.

I'm a crazy experimenter myself. Although I generally do like to grow things "the way you're supposed to" in conditions the first time I grow them, and I've never grown runners before. But I guess since I'm growing them in containers, I'm already doing things in an un-ideal way.

Runner beans do fine in containers if they are large enough and you can provide sufficient nutrition and moisture. As to the supposed antagonism between dill and runners my view is that it is rubbish. Runner beans produce 10 foot vigorous vines with whopping fat tubers which are hardly likely to be affected by a bit of dill weed. I can only provide the anecdotal evidence that in my garden dill happily grows amongst the runners without any detriment to either. But I imagine any claim for the antagonism is equally anecdotal.

I am not aware of any anecdotal evidence about dill and runners. I was just asking to see if there was any.
