I'm no expert, although I do have a couple of these.

The established seedlings as well of the larger specimens, require a really fast-draining potting mix. I use almost straight scoria (man-made pumice) in an unglazed pot, with just a couple strands of long-fiber sphagnum, and water it every day.

Even for this little guy, I'd suggest potting it shallow in a 3"-4" pot, water it ~ once a day, and give it dappled sun or just bright shade until it gets going. The hard part of growing these is letting the plant and the medium get bone dry on a daily cycle. Water it well in the morning, then RESIST keeping it damp. You might try a foliar application of weak fertilizer once in a while. I think that getting a slight temperature drop at night is a good idea for this, and a lot of other species.

Here's a picture showing root development of a 3 year old which I grew from seed. The root structure is only possible if it goes bone dry daily, or nearly so.

Culture of this plant is nothing like conditions that would favor an amaryllis. Your plant should hopefully start showing some activity as spring warms up.
