Ely & Bella, they are both beautiful but do tend to look quite different.

I have one too that is about to open and I can't wait to see which shape I end up with!! I had forgotten that 4 flowers are possible with this one. I will most definitely try papilio on one or maybe two of the flowers and I have another bulb that is about 2 weeks behind with a big bud also.. I'll have to think about what to put on that one. I hope I get the curvy one..... ;-))

I tried pollinating him for several seasons in a row, but unfortunately he did not tie the seeds. Maybe you are more lucky.

Did you try papilio? I would think that since mandonii and aulicum are both compatible with papilio by themselves, that a cross between the two would also be.. am I wrong in thinking that Green & Saturn is a cross between mandonii and aulicum? Well, I've got some papilio pollen from last season so I will give it a good try!!

Hi Donna, I do not really remember who I really was trying to pollinate him, and in my notes I did not find any information. I remember that his pollen is also difficult to accept by other hippeastrum.

Well, I will certainly keep everyone informed as to the shape and color of my flowers and to the success or failure of pollination!! My first scape is taking its sweet time to open, probably wants to wait until all my Sonatinis are done blooming so it can take center stage!! ;-))

Bella and Ely, you have some beautiful blooms! I actually really like Ely's bloom. That is a form and color combination that really speaks to me.

My first Green & Saturn is showing its buds and there are going to be 4! flowers! This tells me I may end up with one that looks like Nguyen's or Elys..we shall see!! I'll be happy with either.

Here she is!! She looks like a combination of both and I am really happy with her. Her color is really vibrant and there's no way you can ignore her when you walk into the room. To me she mostly resembles aulicum but, her flower is larger for sure.

Here she is outside at dusk in low light and she's still beautiful!

Here is her gorgeous throat!!

My second bulb just has 2 flowers and they are smaller so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was a different clone.

Thanks guys, we had 3 inhumanly hot days in the mid 90s (F) and humid (no air-conditioners in yet) so I was afraid the flowers would bolt before the next two had a chance to open. But, mercifully that weather has been replaced with high 60s so the flowers are holding up well waiting for flower # 3 to open.

I happened to have an Evergreen blooming and it was suggested to me to put some G & S on the Evergreen so I did 2 and I also did 2 on Sonatini Green Valley....

What I really want though is for papilio to take so when they're ready, I'll be ready!! ;-))

I love yours too and although the shape seems similar, I think the shape might be slightly different... (?)...maybe not. Your color doesn't appear to be as intensely orange, yours is coming across with a little pink in it!! Mine is an extremely saturated orange. I notice that your un-open stamens aren't purple, mine weren't either!

My first bulbs flowers are quite large, it appears that the second slightly smaller bulb has smaller flowers. It is just opening and it appears the same, just smaller.

I just took this picture and it's overcast and raining lightly so the color isn't as intense as my others that were taken outside with the sun out or actually shining on the flowers. This one does look more like yours.

Yes, I'd say they are twins!! What are you going to choose for pollen for her?

my pictures aren't good for the color , the sun is so strong and hot and there is wind so I can't choose a good place for taking them . I'll try at the end of afternoon if possible.

There's no pink in the red , looks like the last pictures you posted.
I am wondering how a mandonii crossed with an aulicum can give 4 flowers per scape !

Well Béa, I was wondering the same thing about the 4 flowers!! I googled blossfedliae and found a picture that looks very much like it could be one of the parent of our G & S but the blossfeldiae that Komoriya offers is just a plain version and this one is from Brasil....what do you think?

Donna, I think your idea is really worth considering, and even with other pictures of blossfeldiae! It seems convincing for one of the parents! And then ..... have we ever heard of mandonii at Komoryia? I do not believe

I just emailed Miki to ask if she could find out the parentage for us and sent her one picture, it was all that I could up-load to her for some reason...I would have liked to have sent her a couple.

I received a reply from Miki this morning and she asked Dr. Komoriya what the cross was and he said it was aulicum x mandonii so I guess everyone's first assumptions were correct!! I did suggest blossfeldiae but he says mandonii so I guess we can take that to the bank!

Finaly , I am surprised because of the number of flowers. Thank you Donna . I tried one papilio and one Lima on mine..

Oh, Fred, I'm really sorry, I can not say that I myself was very successful, but I still have some seeds that mature, one or two with the yungacence X mandonii cross as pollen donor

Oh Fred, you and I are in same boat, no takers at all for me this year except one. As luck will have it, I forgot to put a label on it!!! You might know, it is something on sonatini # 190 I have a suspicion it is Fledermaus but not at all positive. The rest, probably 50+ crosses all failed! Do you think it's something in the air?? ;-))

Béa, I have tried papilio and Exotic Star and so far nothing. I pollinate twice a day... I think I will try Madame Butterfly too. I don't have Lima or Tango, just 2 year old pollen. I thought of trying calyptratum but want something with more than 2 flowers so I don't think I will as it might dull the color too. Still thinking....I might try my Moziaque variant, same color with a huge green throat, might produce a nice variation. Still thinking......

Thanks Anja for the nice comments on our flowers, it is really beautiful and my husband keeps looking at it saying " I really like that flower!!" Most of them don't even get a glance!

I know, and we've had such a weird spring. Maybe they all had "head aches" or they just weren't in the "mood". I do remember you saying that you were going to try crossing with Fledermaus so maybe that's the one. Either way, I hope someday soon you'll be pleasantly surprised :-)))

I think you should Fred, just request a large one (ha ha) so you'll get 4 flowers!! ;-))

If you buy one now you'll most likely get one from the batch that Béatrice and I got ours from. Some of the others bought a year or more ago, are a bit different....just food for thought.

But on the other hand, you wouldn't want to buy one and find that it has already bloomed as ours bloomed at the same time, now!! I've had that happen plenty of times, bulb arrives with the empty socket where the scape was....

Donna , I tried 2 different papilio clones , Lima and sprekelia as I had one flowering , but only once for each one , I don't have much time , let's see...But the prospect of having descendants with 4 flowers is really interesting! ....

They all sound interesting, I hope at least a few will take for you.

I did papilio, Exotic Star, Flamenco Queen and Madame Butterfly. If only one takes, I will be happy. The second bulb with the two flowers is still blooming and not quite ready but I have to make the decision soon. I think Lima or Tango would be good but my pollen is from 2015 but I'll look again to see if there was something else in the 2016 batch. I do have the Komoriya cybister Fire Blade (with 4 flowers) which I might try. My freezer is full of pollen as far back as 2014, I can't bring myself to throw it away yet but I'll have to!!

I have two swelling pods on Green Valley that are growing nicely, perhaps G & S is one that doesn't like to set seeds but her pollen will be good?? ( like Party Pooper does for me)..

It is with a heavy heart that I must report that all my pollination attempts on the lovely Green & Saturn have failed!!!! I have just one more cross to watch but I'm sure she will go the way of all the others. Maybe next year when I have more flowers to put her pollen on I might have better luck!!

Oh farts!!!! I'm sorry it didn't take :-(((( I just ordered a Green & Saturn and Bronze Lady so hopefully they'll come in shortly. On a sad not as well, I just lost my Autumn Rose Lady to rot...so oh farts again. Maybe I'll have better luck Bronze Lady (yet to come) and Hoshi no Ohji that's starting to put out some new leaves. Fred, I'm sorry you lost your Autumn Rose Lady!! I ordered 2 bulbs this past spring and although the bulbs were very small, they are doing well, both have rooted and one has sent up the striped leaf we're all so crazy about!! I never did have one.. way back when, I had ordered a few and they turned out to be Autumn Pink Lady not the end of the world as they seem to do well for most everyone.

I had a September Rose Line that I bought when we first started buying these bulbs and it never did a thing. It was a good sized bulb and it rooted so after 3 years I planted it out in one of my barrels with some others and about 3 weeks later it put up 2 of the most glorious striped leaves you can imagine and I was ecstatic!! I checked on it a week or so later and it was gone!! Either a 4 legged varmint or a 2 legged one removed it, tag and all!! This particular barrel was way up on the corner of our property where it gets dabbled sun most of the day so it could easily have been removed by a human thief!! The other 15 or so bulbs that were in the barrel also were just fine, just the one with the striped leaves went missing!!!

I hope you enjoy your Green & Saturn as much as I did mine and I hope you get 4 flowers!!

That's when you keep a pellet gun (not the real dangerous type) by your side. One shot to the butt to either the 4 legged or the more serious and destructive 2 legged ones ought to do the trick :-)))

Well, this barrel was far from the house, the only one not able to be seen from the house even during the day. I chose it because of its dabbled sun, I thought it would be good for the sun sensitive striped leaves...Ha! My husband has one of those guns that throws tennis balls for dogs to chase and he uses it to scare the pigeons away. It works for about 10 seconds and they they're back.
