Hello! I'm moving into my boyfriend's house this summer and I am hoping to do some redecorating in his 70's house! Any ideas for the fireplace? I'm trying to convince him to paint the brick white, but he's nervous about smoke stains afterwards...thx!

Thanks everyone! Here are some pics of his living room/dining room. Don't mind the mess!:) as you can see they are the colors he lives-and the colors I dislike. Looking for ways to combine our likes(he likes brown and Red and I like cream, grey, yellow and turquoise). looking for a middle ground and ways to update the 70s feel and lighten the room!

I painted my fireplace surround several years ago and have no regrets. The fireplace is in an alcove, and looked dark and menacing before painting.
