Beans with peppers..

last modified: 10 years ago

apparently there is some "rumor" that peppers should not be planted with beans, but i can't find any real info.. so i'll ask here to see if there are others who grow peppers next to pole/beans without any noticeable impact?

the only possible reason i can think of is maybe the peppers don't like the nitrogen from the beans? or is it the beans that don't like peppers?

i stumbled on this burpee page which says bean is a companion plant for peppers?

I dont think peppers get tall enough to benefit pole beans to trellis, I don't think I would mix the two. I am growing sunchokes and next year will grow runner beans with them. Sunchokes would be an excellent trellis as they get 10ft+ tall and have edible tubers.

Never heard not to interplant beans, and peppers. I was told to not plant beans with root crops like onions, beets, reddish, and such as they do best in low nitrogen soil.

The nitrogen the beans fix is locked up until the bean roots start to break down. So it won't be usable by other plants while the beans are growing.

I don't believe in the companion gardening hype as my own experiences go against what I have read. The only reason I can think of as to why peppers and beans might not be good companions is because of different growth habits. At least as pertains to pole beans because you then have to take shading into consideration. Bush beans and peppers seem like they'd do just fine next to each other as long as they're given the proper spacing.

Although, now that I think about it, if you regularly fertilize your peppers (I don't) it might be a problem for the beans.

Look up Companion Planting, lots of info. I've been gardening for over 35 years with good success; and even greater success over the past three years when I've paid some attention to companion planting. There are certain types of veggies/veggie families that shouldn’t be planted right next to each other. It doesn’t mean they can’t be in the same garden but should have another type of crop between them…….

Off the top of my head here’s a few –

Peppers: avoid - beans, Brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collards……), peas,

Peppers: Good with – tomatoes, onions/chives/leeks, garlic, eggplant, carrots, beets, herbs (basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary…), swiss chard, spinach, lettuce, radish, cucumbers.

    Just my two cents...

    > Peppers: avoid - beans, Brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collards……), peas,

Yea, lots of people say avoid, but no mention of why or any at least some information/data why some have come to that conclusion. it's even in the wikipedia, but again, there are citations that there is no evidence to back up the information about not planting peppers with beans, or beans with peppers..

guess i will be going against the grain and planting beans near peppers.. the beans will be on a different row behind the peppers about 12 inches away. i will be reporting back with periodic updates with some actual results. :)
