Try moving this to the Landscape Design forum. It offers more of the type of help you really need - this is really a design issue rather than one of plant selection. That tends to be a lot more incidental to the project than you might think :-)

Also it is very helpful to include your zone and approximate geographic location to the post, as well as sun and shade conditions.

Are you going to leave the concrete or asphalt in place? And will you fence the area? Using containers would expand the planting potential and leave what ground soil area is available to plant something with some height, like a small tree.
