Unless you're hurting for storage, I wouldn't recommend shelving above a dresser. It's very hard to reach (unless you're in the WNBA!). Use this space as an opportunity to display some wonderful artwork.

Do you have an original piece you could hang there? And/or some interesting sculpture that could sit atop it? Art and sculpture don't have to be expensive, they just have to inspire you. Check out local art galleries, art school exhibits, Etsy, yard sales, flea markets... there's a wealth of interesting things out there.
