Onion Seedling Up Date

The 1015Y onion seeds that I planted in my cold frame last Oct. were moved into the garden the middle of Feb. and now look like a real nice crop of onions coming on. This was my first time trying to grow onions in the cold frame. I was afraid the seed might be a little to old (3yrs.) but they look like all the seed germinated. I now have somewhere in the neighbor hood of 400 beautiful onion plants growing in the garden. I have tried growing them directly in the garden several times but with no luck. I know it would be easier to just buy the plants but I wanted to try it this way. According to Jim Sheifler of OSU on 'Oklahoma Gardening' onions grown this way or in a hoop house are less likely to bolt than store bought bundles.

So far (i.e. no hail!) it has been a very good year for onions.

I agree. We have had almost ideal onion weather, except for some prolonged dry spells, and we just got enough rain to probably make up for the dry spells.

I'm worried about hail coming with next week's severe weather, but it is springtime in Oklahoma, so we just have to get used to the fact that hail season is here. I think my bird netting on hoops over the onions would protect the onions from any hail up to the size of maybe golf balls or half-dollars. If we were to get tennis ball or baseball sized hail, I don't know if anything could protect the plants. It has been a long time since we've had big hail at our house, but in recent years we've had far too much medium-sized hail.

And, to be honest, if tennis ball or baseball sized hail hits, we would have a lot more to worry about than garden damage. I expect we'd be too busy dealing with damage to cars and vehicles to fret too much about garden damage, at least initially.
