Rooting in Water

last modified: 10 years ago

As I've written before, I've been rooting my leaves in water in order to watch the roots emerge, and to study the patterns they form.

However, I've seen comments regarding this practice, mostly alleging that roots formed in water are more fragile, brittle, etc. , and so the practice is discouraged.

I'm no scientist, but I observe and check things carefully, and so I rooted two leaves from the same plant differently : one in water and one in a mixture of potting compound and perlite. Comparing these roots, I saw no difference at all. Both were strong and quite flexible, and both, when planted, produced plantlets at approximately the same time.

Of course, all plants are different, and possibly different varieties might produce different results.

Has anyone else tried this ?
