Hi. I recently moved to my first house and I am new to gardening. Always wanted to have my own peonies. Bought roots in Costco and was going to plant them according to instructions. First half of April was cold (I live in northern VA), we had a few freezing warnings, so I decided to wait until it warms up. It says all over the internet to plant barefoot peonies in the fall so I decided to wait. Today I noticed that the roots have given shoots (one has grown through the plastic)! What should I do? After April started very cold, it has gotten very warm now (today is April 22), mid to high 70s. Is it too warm to plant them now? It appears they needed to be planted as soon as purchased, I thought they were dry roots. Clearly I know nothing about planting lol. To add to the complexity of the situation, my house is a new construction, there are a few garden beds where the builder planted shrubs, but other than that it's all clay. I was going to wait until fall to have time to create new garden beds the proper way, I just don't think anything can survive in clay that is hard to break. What are my options? I don't want to kill them (I have 18 roots). Please help!
