25 years old and nervous

The place where we'll be moving is a single-wide and its very cute.
I fell in love with it immediately.
I'm going to share the place with my Mom, which I don't mind since we are very close.
Anywho, I am nervous about how others will react towards where we're going to be moving, with the whole "white trash" stereotype and whatnot.
My sister calls it a trailer park in a rude and judging tone.
We were looking for an apartment but it's impossible to find one that's affordable, has two bedrooms, allows pets, and is in a decent neighbourhood.
A manufactured home just made sense to us.
Why do I feel the need to justify where we live?
If I start dating someone, what if they are turned off by my house?
I try not to care what others think, but it's hard.
Does anyone have any advice for me?
Also, tornados.
We don't have a storm shelter in the park, but it's sort of rare that we have tornados in our city, so...
Sorry for such a long post!!

Unless your sister is willing to pay for your housing, she should stay out of your decisions.

You raise a great point about finding a two bedroom home at an affordable price. Is the park a nice one? Is it safe? Are the homes well kept? If so, go for it.

i think there are many who, like you, want affordable living and are far for being trashy. So likely your neighbors will be decent people just like you. If you are still concerned about others opinion, invite them over to see your nice cute house and your wallet which will be a lot fuller than theirs living in rental properties. Finally , white trash lives everywhere, case in point the Affluenza people in a pricey Fr Worth area. Carry on and enjoy your home.

I think a lot of people are changing their ideas about mfg housing after this "economic downturn". Have you seen the reports of people living in converted dumpsters, storage sheds, railroad cars, etc.? I think the mfg industry is going to explode with growth. And, I've seen many trashy trailer tracts that are full of rust bucket trailers from the 60's and 70's. But, I know my attitude has changed about mfg homes now that I've started my quest. (I am located in the Atlanta, GA area).

Hi chocolatemuffins! I'm glad you asked! I agree with bossyvossy; once people see your cute little home, they will change their minds! My 30 yr old daughter lives with me, and we're best friends. :-)

There were some kids in my high school who called me "trailer trash" back in the day. Considering that both my parents had masters degrees and were very erudite and refined, it seemed like the kids calling me names were the trashy ones.

When my dad sold our 1973 mobile home and small lot in 2008 for over $200,00, I think he was laughing all the way to the bank, haha!

Two pieces of advice: first, take my word for it: the older you get, the less you will care what anybody else thinks. Second, if you want the real definition of "white trash," look up Atticus Finch's lecture to Scout on the subject in my favorite novel, "To Kill A Mockingbird." You can google it.

And any guy who would think any less of you for living in an MH is waaay below the standard you should set for yourself.

    :-)

Sometimes sisters are hard to deal with. You can choose to ignore her rude and judging tone or play on it. Start using all the trailer trash talk, you know what I mean. Throwing it back at her shows her you don't care that her judging tone doesn't get it with you. She needs to be more respectful, you are the one taking care of mom, not her. As to what other people think, if they act the same or say those kinds of things, they're not your friends either. Where you chose to live, for whatever reason, isn't who you are. It's how you live your life, how you treat people and let them treat you. If you like that place, be proud of it, and make everyone know it. It seems like it makes sense to me. Good choice for you and mom. Go for it.
