I would recommend unpotting the bulbs and peeling off the outer layers until you get to all white flesh. You'll also want to remove any roots that aren't healthy and white-ish. Then repot the bulbs into 2 or more pots of the same size with fresh soil (preferably a loose, well draining soil). When the weather warms up, put it in a sunny location outside, water regularly and fertilize occasionally. The flowers for this year have already been determined by the growing conditions the plant had last year. My guess is you'll get at least a few flowers though. Congratulations on your $1 bargain!

They look like good healthy off-sets that have grown up well. I'm sure a bit of fertiliser will go down well, but I think this looks like a great bargain for $1, and if you are patient there could be lots of flowers.

Berkeleysgr8---I guess I would be taking off the outer layers to check for disease? Replanting in two pots sounds like a good idea. I'll put it outside for the summer and fertilize. If I get a few flowers, then great. If not, then I will have to be patient and wait until next year. I am guessing it will be a common red amaryllis. Thanks for the advice.

Hippiezep---I wonder where this amaryllis has been and how long the last owner had it. But I'll never know! I also realized that I would have to be patient. I am hoping for lots of flowers one day!

Yes, the purpose of peeling the bulbs is to look for disease and bugs. You want to get rid of red spots which can be indicative of red blotch, which is caused by the fungus Stagonospora curtisii. It is a killer of bulbs and it's easily passed from one plant to another (you can do a search on this site to learn more).

I think you'll get some blooms before winter. It will take a bit of patience though! *smile*

OK. I'll check for disease and bugs. When I saw this amaryllis, I wondered about the possibility of disease. But then the $1 made me go for it. I agree that patience will be of utmost importance!
