Outdoor decor

A year behind schedule, our new pool should be open at our beach house this year.

I am trying to find some fun throw pillows, but nothing tickles my fancy. I tried Pottery Barn, Ballard, Anthro, Horchow, Frontgate, Elaine Smith. Am I forgetting a good source?

Allso any good sources for more interesting umbrellas?

TIA

I have Tuuci umbrellas. Stingray is also another one I like. The cantilever is fabulous. Another great umbrella company is the Santa Barbara umbrella company. Shadescapes from Australia is another great brand.

For outdoor cushions, prefer to make my own. Love fabrics from Janus et Cie (Plume is my favorite) and Sunbrella. Then I am getting inserts from an outdoor foam company, Sailrite. I also purchased fabric from Sailrite.

    Good luck!

Joss and Maine has an outdoor pillow shop right now with some nice looking ones.

Lowes and Home Depot actually have them, I got some there that I like a lot (we don't spend a lot of money on pillows b/c the dog chews them).

World Market has some cute umbrellas.

Oh dang, eandhl2, I just clicked on that website you posted. Should not have done that! Those pillows and cushions are so stinking cute!

I just got back from my 'anti-boycott' trip to Target. They had some really cute outdoor pillows...here's one. Although it looks like they did not center the pattern correctly on this pic from the website the ones in the store matched well.

I was impressed with the quality of the new Target Marimekko line for summer. Hefty fabrics. They had umbrellas too, but patterns are limited and I don't think they are what you would want, based on house.

Have you checked Serena & Lily?

I agree thatEtsy is an interesting source for pillows.

Giati has some interesting umbrellas, and we used to rep their line back in the 1990s.

    Lars,

I have Giatti loungers! I love them. Unfortunately, the Giatti fabric was very pricey:-(

    Thanks, everyone for your ideas.

As for style ... The pool area has an old lichen covered stone wall on one end, and beachgrasses, the decking is all irregular stone (drawing a blank on the name), the pool itself is dark grey so the water will hopefully look lagoon like. I've specified masses of white and blue hydrangea. The fence is split rail cedar with a moongate. The house is a 1900s grey and white Dutch Colonial. I am flexible on price, I just want something different.

This is the dining set: https://teakwarehouse.com/outdoor-dining-set-reclaimed-teak-trestle-table-bench-with-5-wicker-chairs.html

I think I want grey and white or off white for cushions and umbrella.

So far I like this umbrella for the chaise lounges (teak), with grey and white stripes,

    http://www.potterybarn.com/products/round-umbrella-canopy-pole-set-premium-sunbrella-awning-stripe/?cm_src=AutoCSLPIP

As for pillows.... I think it needs to be bold. I don't want stripes, though, and no animals, anchors, boats, words, bicycles etc. Nothing too delicate. But I am tired of ikat, suzani and Moroccan.

So far these are the only contenders

Did you look at Thomas Baker? I love looking through their catalog and I believe they make some custom pillows and cushions. Love that big peony print pillow and it should look great with the grey and white.

Edited to say, I love your choices, both for the furniture and the adds of the hydrangea & grasses with the stone wall. Perfect environment for entertaining. Not sure I'd do the stripe umbrella, maybe keep it solid as it's a big feature, but that's just me.

Thanks, guys ... I will take a look.
Different question .... I noticed that our landscape architect included some chairs around the pool is his rendering, not just chaise lounges. It occurs to me I don't know many people who actually layout in the sun so maybe chairs are a good idea, with an ottoman. Chaise also can be ungainly to get in and out of .

robo, I've had that hanging chair on my Pinterest "to buy" page for a year. I have been debating for a long time pulling the trigger, just not sure on comfort...

MtnRdRedux I find that my MIL and our older guests do primarily sit on the chairs at our house, rather than the chaise lounges. We have a number of wicker chairs inc. rockers and swivel chairs that get routinely used.

We also got some of the classic wooden beach chairs, the fold-up adjustable ones, for use on our tanning shelf in our pool. I've found them to be extremely comfy! They come in all different colors/ sizes and styles. This is the one we got:

+1 for chairs in addition to chaises! It's very rare I see someone with mobility issues or even just generally a bit older in a chaise if there's a chair available. E.g. at my inlaw's pool they have a variety of seating including chaises, but I only ever see the inlaws on the chairs (and they are both very active and mobile).

Great, thanks ... Will have to find some chairs.
As for the anthro hanging chair ... Not comfy at all. My girls wanted one for their room at the beach ... But after sitting in one at a friends, even they didn't want it.

Thanks mtn. That makes it easy to cross that off my list now.

My stuff is all mcm so I don't know if any of it will fit, but I very much like the knoll outdoor stuff. I especially love the white Bertoia chairs with yellow cushions and petal table, but the wire mesh back is a little uncomfortable to slouch against. Today is their last day for the 15% off, free shipping sale I think. I am not sure if this is right for your design, though.

Thank, Rocky, that is great looking. But you are right, probably not for my space so much. My next house!

I think I see the look you've got going. My own preference with that gray pool and eventual gray teak---outstanding table btw!!---would be something a tad more vintage feeling. I am surprised you didn't come up a more retro choice but I like the pillow for its color and impact. The thing about pillows is that they will fade, blow away or disappear over the course of a summer. Next year there will be new pillows on the market and your aesthetic may have shifted enough that other patterns appeal to you. They are not a commitment, just a summer flirtation :-)

We have two umbrellas out back, one between two chaises on a deck and one over an oval dining table on the patio. Eleven years ago we started with green umbrellas, then a subtle black on taupe pattern, then one year we had two different colors (terrible idea). For the past three or four years we've had stone, and i liked the calmness of all the shades of stone with our khaki house trim. Handy Guy replaced the stone colored umbrellas with identical ones this year, as usual several ribs broken (wind and rain, no one at home to lower them) and I was suddenly very bored! We just bought new tomato red round umbrellas, and while I am still getting used to the round shape I love the color and can finally just enjoy it. Even if it isn't perfect it isn't permanent.

My suggestion would be to skip pillows altogether. They don't get used and are just one more thing to have to haul in at the end of the season, then back out at the beginning, have to clean, etc. I'd keep it simple and use landscaping to decorate, maybe add a metal sculpture or something like that and a wind spinner.

This one moves in a real neat way. You can watch a video of it on the site

A friend of mine has one that is similar to this, and it is also really great when the wind is moving it.

Agree w/u about chaise lounges. They can be difficult to get into and out of. An adjustable chair with an ottoman makes the most sense to me. Telescope makes a nice one.

But I would still have a couple of chaises.

This is a closeup of the pool area. The light blue is bluestone, the white is grass or plantings, and the green is the lawn areas outside of the fenced in pool area.

I bought the furniture today at a local vendor, and I opted for pretty much just the pieces on the plan that you see, but I did go with the table that has chairs and a bench. I also got two comfy "armchairs" with an ottoman, and two umbrellas. All of it either teak or a soft grey driftwood wicker. I wanted to see the umbrella in person and ended up having to go with plain canvas because they didnt have two striped ones.We can always add seating but I don't want it to look like a resort. The low stone walls on either side of the steps down to the pool are sitting walls. To the left, out of the frame and beyond some grasses are 6 teak Adirondacks facing the ocean.

This is the dining set; when it is just our family we will only use the wicker chairs, facing oceanfront

Here is a close up of one of the armchairs. And two pillow contenders. I kind of like the palm leaf but it may be too formal. What I like about it though is the bold pattern and the fact that it doesn't really introduce another color; our landscape architect was told only green and white, maybe some blue for plant material.

Tib, love that rusty sculpture, the first one? Where is it from? DYK?

The peony is my favorite. Also, if you decide to purchase more lounge chairs, my mom's clubhouse pool just replaced a bunch of their old ones with the same chaise style, yet taller -- MUCH easier to get in and out of. As usual, love your choices.

That particular one is by a Belgian artist. You can find it here:

    http://djack.be/Photos_1.html

These are fun too. The tall spiral sculptures move much nicer than do the "pinwheel" style. A client of mine bought one (don't know that artist. Could in fact be this guy) in Maine, actually, that is sailboats, the rusty metal with a blue patina, and when the wind moves it, it is incredible. I want one so bad!

While I love the peony pillow, I think the blue and green palm print works best with your scheme, especially against the green backdrop of plant material and the bluestone under it all. And the cording adds a nice bright touch.

I think it depends what other accessories appeal...like, do you want bright fuschia lanterns or would you prefer green/aqua? How about outdoor dishes?

OMG, Robo, thanks for reminding me. A big part of pool "decor" is towels. And I already have some. I have had them for a while. I got them from Sundance maybe a decade ago, for the lakehouse. They are very plush and very large, and were too heavy for my kids then. But I would like to use them now because they were $$$ and I think I have 10 or 12!

I bought them because they screamed lake, but they still may work in this rustic-y setting.

I will post them if I can get a pic.

A nice thick towel could be very welcome for chillier days too.

Ugh I really like that pineapple pillow. And a little farther down are some nice florals that would coordinate with the peony pillow.

Laura, That is an excellent selection!

In the meantime, I mocked it up with my striped towels. I would really like to use them, they were like 65 each and are like new....

Funny thing is I was already attracted to the modern pillow, i show below but I ruled it out because it didnt relate to anything, not the house or the colors I have inside or out.

Looking at them together, I think my subconcious was channeling the towels!

Thrilled that you have chosen such colorful accoutrements for your pool area! Love the print pillow and the bicycle---that looks so Maine-y! Not loving the pillows with rope and knots, they look uncomfortable and themey. A solid darker blue with that combo you have would look nice, or even the lighter blue of the pillow above without the embellishment.

<3 Question - will the burlapy/lineny beige pillows play nicely with driftwood grey? It all looks very nice together in the mockup.

LOL, KSWL, I bet you cannot believe that I own such colorful towels! I really liked the print pillow because it is different, and because I think seeing beautiful MCM projects like Pipdog's and now Rockybird's has swayed me toward MCM. I had it saved on my ipad as an image but I could not recall the source; i just found them here on Houzz. Funny i have never bought from Houzz before (and that was not where I first saw them). I get you on the knots!

Robo, The wicker set is funny. In some light it looks almost honey, it others is if very much grey. Look at this shot form the mfrs site below. THe DR chairs look diff than the seating, and even among the seating, the two chairs look quite different. I saw it in person and it is most like the chair on the bottom left seating photo.

tibbrix, where did you find that copper wind spiral? I would love one like that...
