Cathy, if you provide some details of care to date, we can better make suggestions. Watering regime? Where placed, ie. how much light? I'm talking the basics. And that is almost certainly where the problem lies. Only because I know this happens very often, I'd guess some combination of too much water, too little light energy coming in.

It's been in that pot for about 8 or 9 months. I water it when it gets a little dry. I even put a little fertilizer on it. I'm going to put it outside on my porch for more indirect lighting.

That would be a good start. Nothing you wrote jumps out at me as problematic. Try the increased light, continue to water judiciously, and see where things go.

Ok thanks. Should I cut the stem with no leaves that is sticking out?

There's a possibility that a dormant bud or two might exist somewhere along that piece of stem. I think I'd just leave it all be for now. BTW, down in S. Florida this very same plant climbs up 60 ft. pine trees with luxuriant growth. It can really develop given proper conditions!

Wow! I hope I can get mines to grow at least two feet so I can propagate. I may have to send it to S. Florida. Lol. Thanks for all your input.
