It looks like Lamiastrum Herman's Pride, a good groundcover for dry shade, and not invasive like other lamiastrums.

Thank you!! I was about to pull it all but I made that mistake in my first home and am trying to be more patient and educate myself first this time around!

Sorry, but that is just regular yellow archangel, Lamiastrum galeobdelon. It is a very aggressive spreader and considered a noxious weed/invasive species across many areas of the country. 'Herman's Pride', one of the very few named forms, is supposed to be a clumper and not so aggressively spreading however there are published reports of it behaving almost as aggressively as the straight species.

You can tell the difference between the two rather easily with the foliage - regular yellow archangel will have splashes of white variegation on the leaves - like in your photo - whereas Herman's Pride will have a distinctly netted appearance to the foliage variegation.

I would strongly suggest you get rid of it as soon as possible, otherwise there will be not much of anything else but this growing in your shade garden!!

Ok- I was curious if it's working as a groundcover why I would pull it - the only other thing currently in this area are three clumps of a tall grass and a few host as but maybe it's better to get it out.

Various plants that work as groundcovers are considered invasive species.......depending on where you are located - Vinca minor, English ivy, wintercreeper, ajuga and the yellow archangel are just a few. These invade natural areas and overwhelm or smother native plants. Then there are the groundcovers that are extremely aggressive spreaders that can take over entire gardens - all of the above plus sweet woodruff, chameleon plant, goutweed, creeping jenny and few others.

If not a listed invasive where you are located, the need for removal is not so intent but just be aware that this plant can spread densely, rapidly and widely into areas where you may not want it and find it difficult to remove.
