furnishing ideas!!

we have a very small, older three bedroom ranch style home. our basement stairs are in between the kitchen and living room, which I absolutely hate. we have no dining room and our very small eat-in kitchen sits at the front of the house.
in order to gain more entertaining room,
we knocked down a wall in between the living room and one of the bedrooms. we also half-walled the basement stairs on the living room side to give it a more open feel.
we are turning the old living room area into a dining room and making the old bedroom the living room area.
I am now left with one long, odd shaped room..... any ideas on furnishing, please?

the stove pipe from the furnace went up the closet to the bedroom, so instead of moving it, my husband recreated a "pillar" on the other side to match which gives us a nook in which our tv and some cabinets will be placed..

sooooooo.... with the rugs..... how would I tie everything together? I have never had a combined dining/living room... I'm so lost
  • 10 years ago
the first picture is my little baby tiny kitchen.. the table has two leafs that can go in it... I plan on keeping at least one in once moved to the new dining room
please excuse my goofy kids.. but the next two pictures kinda show my decorating style... I think...
the third picture shows my brown loveseat, we have the matching couch also.
I apologize, I'm very new to this, any suggestions would be extremely helpful!

Stephanie, you can try doing something like this

    Good luck

ok, so the sofa and loveseat are both recliners? that takes up a lot of space. will you die without them? how about going a little lighter. do you have a better idea of your style? any modern roots hiding in there? it looks like they are struggling to come out. any color preferences?

also how often do the teens hang out there, like me i am sure you do not wish to lose that attention. It was very important to me as my child aged. how many teens are you normally feeding, entertaining? How many of that great wood chair do you have?

i like these, i like the wood, i know this furniture holds up forever. it is easy to change out the cushion covers, and it has a smaller foot print. this is my favorite of the 3 i am suggesting.

since you like the browns, lets try to add some brightness to it, these are preliminary, because we are not sure yet or everything else.

to have fun... I love the second couch and the fourth color pattern you showed me... please, I love your way of thinking!! I do always levitate towards Brown's for some reason... all of my furniture reclines which WILL take up to much space... please, I LOVE your input!

I have lots of kids who hang with us.. which I absolutely would never, ever change... we have a very busy home!

ok, i ditched everything else. understand that couch has a black base not brown. Everyone has been telling me that scarves are out. but how about some nice sheers to go over the blinds? are we trying to control costs here?

I like to control costs where I can, but have a bit of a budget.... also, we decided to paint the walls a light gray throughout the room and hallway.and have white trim... not sure about an accent wall yet?? we did rounded corners, which are new to us...
also have hardwood floors which we are gonna sand and redo... thinking of keeping them their natural color..

ok, well then, lets not do the brown blinds, and are you sure i can get you a slightly more modern rug with a different take on the black and cremey white theme?

for this i would pull bright colored pillows, or blue and whites, following much the same as above. i can show you, but it is getting kind of full in here.

That couch is lovely, but you can also get them in futon styles, and fairly similar ones at less expensive stores. more bang for your buck. I would also get fold up chairs or couches out of foam, that can easily more in and out of the room to handle over flow, including those impromptu over nites you get.

oh, would you be comfortable going non brown for a while? also, you might want to have your kids help in the design, with of course mom's veto. there are literally 100s of pillows on amazon. and there are so many cool ones with cool sayings and stuff it is staggering. I know the new things are little out of what you normally have. and i am happy to scale it all back. it just is going to give you this cool hip look, and despite the fact guys say they do not care they do. and don't believe them they love fuzzy kittens as much as the creepy stuff.

the prices are very reasonable. never feel you insult me, i love to shop. so just give direction and off we will go!

I love the animal print geometric pillow, black and white.. but I love image two of the first samples you slowed me... it's kinda bright and festive! I love that

oh dear i am so confused. first rug had multicolors woven together at an angle. the second was a greek key kinda geometric. all pillows after each rug are just some of the options. the 3rd rug was aqua, green, and blue. so you were talking about the geometric rug? confirm that, then i will give you a few sets of pillows, and can you give me a little more detail on the choice of pillows then i can head that way.
