Induction and Ovens

This is really a multi-part question! We are planning our kitchen in a new build. I have all but settled on an induction range for a number of reasons, namely power, responsiveness, safety, and ease of cleaning. All of my current cookware is induction compatible, so that's not an issue.

Our current layout in the kitchen design shows a range along one wall, and then a wall microwave/oven combo on another. I've been looking at ranges and I'm curious about the ones with two ovens, instead of having a drawer underneath. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the drawer, but I use it because it's storage. Things always seem to get dirty though (maybe that's a symptom of the cheapy electric range we have now?)

We would not typically use the second oven daily. Maybe once per week, and then more heavily when I'm baking or entertaining, let's say quarterly. I do want a range as opposed to a cooktop though, because some of what I do involves searing on the stove and then finishing in the oven - I don't want to carry hot pans from the stove to an oven across the way. If I could have two ovens under my range, then I could gain 30"+ of counterspace near my fridge, which isn't really necessary, but I do love counterspace...

All that being said: Does anyone have any opinion on ranges with two ovens below? Or an opinion on that setup in general? I've never used that kind and the second oven looks tiny - does it work well? Can I still roast a turkey in the bigger of the two?

Also, anything that would possibly make me reconsider induction? I've heard about the buzzing, but can you even hear it if the vent hood is on?

Thank you so much!

If you post this question in the Appliance forum you should get more views from owners. Some micro/convection and other combo ovens may offer other options. The Bosch Benchmark induction range has a warming drawer. A good unit.

Induction buzzing is not universal. I haven't used ranges, but I've used individual burners and some brands buzz and some don't. Induction is great once you get used to it. Make sure you test out the interfaces, they're all a bit different.

We have an older (2008) electric range with 2 ovens. The smaller is on top, which I really love. There are just 2 of us and I would say I use it 98% of the time. The larger bottom oven is convection and I use that when we have family visiting, or when we host Thanksgiving etc. The top oven preheats really fast, works well, and is good ergonomically. We don't have access to gas, so my next range will be induction, but I've not seen any with the smaller oven on top.

I second the suggestion of posting also on the appliance forum. They are very helpful.

I have an Electrolux slide-in induction range with double ovens. The larger oven is on top. I love it! We finished our kitchen reno almost 1 year ago. For 2015 Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays both ovens were going at the same time. The big oven held a 20 pound turkey while the green bean casserole, etc was cooked in the small oven. I have never before had 2 ovens. It felt like a luxury. Even though I typically only need one oven, I am so grateful to have a double oven! I say "Go for it mamacat21!!!"

I have something very similar to what your original plan has. I have a GE slide in induction range with the hated microhood which is a convection micro wave. Across the way I have a counter height electrolux convection oven. I looked at slide in double oven ranges and knew they were not for me as the larger oven is usually on the bottom. Several of the had a door handle that touched the floor when open. I also did not want to be lifting a 30 lb turkey from floor level. I actually took several of my roasters and Dutch ovens to the local pacific sales store and tried out several Rangers and ovens to see what I was most comfortable working with. I am so glad I tried out working with several setups.

I chose well for myself. I have ovens that function well and I don't have to break my back lifting things off of the floor level. I have a good induction range and have found I would not go back to gas or electric. I can sear steak on the top of the range and finish in My oven. I can steam veggies on the range and make baked sweet potatoes and garlic bread in the electrolux oven. I can heat the sauce for the cauliflower in the microwave. I can do all of this and have it all ready at the same time without shuffling things around to get things done.

I would not change a thing. It functions perfectly and will as I get older. No bending into an oven is huge.

You do want induction, but you might prefer a cooktop/double wall oven setup to a range/wall oven setup. Especially if you want weird ovens like speed or steam.

Everyone, thanks so much for the comments! I hadn't thought about the low-ness of the lower oven! I will have to do as you suggest and go try them out at the store.

Fori, I definitely want a range for items that I sear on the stove and finish in the oven - I don't like the idea of carrying a smoking hot pan across the kitchen to put it in the oven. The way the kitchen is laid out, that's what I'd have to do if I only had wall ovens. I don't think I need anything weird for my oven, just regular. But thank you!

I have a GE slide in induction range. Only one oven but the drawer is actually a warming drawer. I thought I wouldn't care about that but I actually use it all the time and find it very handy.

I also have the Samsung induction Chef Duo slide in and love the flexibility for holidays. It has a warming drawer, and a large oven, and just like Barncatz said, that oven can be split in 2 with 2 different temps in it. Plus the warming drawer. I love it.
