'Key West' hosta

Key West is the last hosta in my garden that has yet to appear - it is planted in the ground. While I am waiting for it, I thought I would check the Late Emerging list at the Library but it isn't listed there, nor under My hosta. I also checked Elatior and High Noon (KW is a hybrid thereof) but to no avail.

To those that have grown it longer than a season, do you find it late emerging or is it up already? It is known to be a slow grower. Just wondering if it is a slowpoke to wake up. ... thank you.

Mine is leafing out now. Had mine since 2013, and hasn't been a late riser for me. Hope yours is OK.

I had to look for the thread, lol. My, but we are actively rolling along here!

Thanks, Don for catching this. Any chance you may have taken a picture of yours? Would love to see what a couple-years-old one looks like. :)

Nose to ground this afternoon - still nothing...but my fingers sure get dirty sliding around that dirt looking for sharp pips.

KW - weird...it's near impossible around here to lose a hosta in the ground...wonder what's up? KW had a good-sized shoot last year, nice, very long flowerscape. Should not have twisted scape off last fall...at least I could zero in on the area....instead of referring to a location picture, groan. (I really do have time on my hands, lol)

Apparently, KW is not the last one I am waiting on. I forgot about Diana Remembered until my memory was jogged by Mbug's photos. No sign yet either. I think you have one also?

Wonderfully huge leaves! Thanks, Don. :)

Mine was brand new last year, but it's come up couple of weeks ago with 4 pips (from 2 last year). It's not unfurling yet but it's there. I wonder if maybe the pips are too small to see, since you said you don't know exact location? I was trying to find my unmarked Dancing Queen for days and couldn't find it, but the other day I finally did. Where I wasn't looking!

I find Key West to be a later emerging hosta in relation my other ones. Mine is up and just beginning to unfurl here in central Ohio.

Mk, thank you! - it happened exactly as you described your DQ, lol! I was off close to a foot! and Too far to the left. Lol. Yes, right on again - pips are so tiny and barely up - 1 larger one and 2 smaller ones but an increase from 1 last year :). Glad you found your DQ and discovered an increase too! :D

hostahosta, thank you, that is useful to know! Something else occurred to me about its late arrival. It is on the side of the fence where it is the coolest in the morning (and the wettest) and shaded in part by the house and the house next door so right now, the May sun sits lower in the sky yet and hits that half later. It is 12:30 and it is still shaded. Around 1:30 it should be sunny there....at least 2 hours slower/longer than in summer, understandably. "Better late than never"! :D

ALSO found Diana Remembered! I was so determined she was hiding I started ripping out the sweet woodruff - yes, you guessed it! There it was - engulfed in ground cover! a huge pip up at least an inch....plus a couple wee ones still emerging! Yes!!!

ALL ACCOUNTED FOR! Great beginning of the season - so very pleased with all my hostas!

Poor Fire and Ice - pulled off more pips that were rotted at crown level. Poked around for more survivors - heading back out to perform some surgical cleaning. It would have been amazing this year - it's leap year. :(. It's not a total loss...I can always replace/add to it if it's puny. :)

Lol I'm glad you found it! I was also having trouble finding Knockout and I just went outside the thing is right there in front of me! I huge pip right in front of the rock that marks it. I was looking in the back of the rock! haha

Lol - o what fun hunting down pips! Mine coming up 2nd year here and came up fairly early too, gained as well....papers not in front of me...but I wonder how big the leaves will be this year. It's a tough hosta!

May of last year, a little larger still. This was two eyes that came up. This season, I'm seeing three. Not a fast grower, but half-again as big as this pic would be just fine. Updated pictures will appear periodically on this thread, if you don't mind, Jo : )
