Yeah I think they are bluebells. The bulbs get huge (think they're edible?) When we first moved in, I was like, ooh love these cute flowers. Fast forward a couple of years, I'm killing my back digging them out. Bulbs can be the worst things to eradicate! Took me a few years. Don't even mention muscari, no, I mean it!

The true English bluebells are scented. However, the Spanish ones are not scented. The problem is that they readily hybridize and create unscented offspring, threatening the English bluebells....

As for being edible, I don't know, and I won't try it anyway :-)

I personally don't mind our "invasive" bulb Scilla siberica. By mid-may they're gone.....

They are Spanish bluebells and have a lighter fragrance. Very invasive. They form huge clumps taking over the entire bed, and are very messy looking too by late summer. They are probably the hardest things to get rid of. The little orange poppies are bad too. No dandelions in my garden, but those darn bluebells and poppies pop up every year.

I guessed so, the size was a giveaway.....

Good luck getting rid of them.....

Osmanthus fudingzhu still blooming! I think I found a perfect spot for it :) The wafting perfume is so heavenly.

    Mini penny hydrangea

My first bud on Chinese perfume plant or that's what I think it is :) My trachelospermum mandaianum is also blooming again..hopefully blooms this time.

Brought in one of the Gertrude Jekylls. Gosh, the fragrance is very strong. Wonderful

Fragrant Stella de Oro daylily blooming..cheerful yellow bloom on a rainy day!

I've been scent free for a while, but this month I have Encyclia cordigera

    Brugmansia 'Charles Grimaldi'

    Philadelphus 'Innocence'
    Epiphyllum 'Fruhlingsgold'
    Rosa 'Zephirine Drouhin'

    Nice!

I took out my 'Zephirine Drouhin' a couple of years ago (and replaced with 'Jude the Obscure'). I was just tired of battling leaf drop on this one. One flush of blooms in spring and then she'd be bald the rest of the year. Yours looks awesome :)

Maggie, my roses get black spot as well but I'm too lazy to do anything about it. ;)

Mike, Wow! Your Belle of India jasmine looks great! Can't wait for mine to bloom.

What's your thoughts on the Edgeworthia's scent? Hoping mine might bloom next year.

    Don't know the last plant.

I dug out my edgeworthia a couple of years back too. It was so big, and I felt the light scent and short bloom period wasn't worth all the real estate it was taking up. I guess I'm getting ruthless these days.

Robert, I don't spray for black spot either. I've found that removing any diseased leaves really has helped. The last few years in Vancouver, my roses didn't even lose their leaves over winter, so I stripped them. It's made a real difference even though I still get some spots here and there. But 'Zephirine' would just get completely bald, which would look really funny as she has hardly any thorns, haha.

Finally, after 4 years almost!! Just discovered my ammocharis coranica blooming in secret at the end of the balcony, I should have waited until tomorrow for daylight photos but I was overexcited to share it!!

I was surprised, to detect a sweet alyssum scent from a hedge of Bridal wreath, Spireas the other day.

The orange Ballerina tulips are as dependable as ever, but my fragrant couleur cardinal tulips were not the real MCcoy, but some sort of garish red, unscented variety. Though I have to say that they were somewhat heart warming amidst this morning's flurries.....

    O spring, where art thou?

    last modified: 10 years ago

Spring has vanished for us too..I am in Virginia,it's may and we had a patchy frost yesterday with almost 15-20 days of rain...last year we were in 80-90's this time. I am not even wishing for a jasmine bloom but only my plants to survive this year. Because of the constant rains lost my arabian nights and a grand duke jasmine this year :( Meanwhile my daisy gardenia is with blooms. Some consolation atleast.

    Sorry to hear that Jasminegal...

Here's hoping spring is just around the corner for you!

I've been busy so a bit of catching up. I forgot to mention that I've revised my previous opinion about 'Miss Kim.' After a few days I caught a lovely sweet smell and it was her! The fragrance definitely improved as the flowers matured.

'Mme Hardy' is wonderful. Such delicate petals & cute little eye

Full blown 'Fragrant Cloud'. What a perfume powerhouse
'Evelyn' - delicious peachy fragrance. Really love this one

Philadelphus mexicanus 'Flore Plena' has been blooming. Haven't made up my mind on its scent. Sorta medicinal cold cream like undertones.

Jasminum officinale. Cut some blooms and brought it to friend who flipped out and absolutely loved it. I like it as well just wish it bloomed longer.
Lonicera periclymenum 'Scentsation' has been blooming, unfortunately the Innocence mock orange and tons of lilies are blocking my path to sniff them. :(

    Poor planning on my part.

    So the lonicera doesn't waft, I'm glad I didn't get it :-)

Chilian Jasmine (cestrum parqui) blooming.. I don't know if it was my nose but the fragrance was not so good as cestrum nocturnum. I didn't really like it. The flowers are beautiful.

I was surprised and delighted by the strong and pervasive fragrance of Royal Velvet petunia....Very deep purple color.

    Being a fragrance junkie...love this encyclia rufa....extreme waft factor...yum

and of course last but not least for true_blue clematis Oberon now in full flower! And this is my first ever clematis, i do have one other but its not in flower! so i have nothing to compare it to! but boy is it fragrant!!! You can smell it a good few feet away :) And not to rub it in but as i was throwing the local news paper away i saw it for sale in there as well :P

Thanks for the update Brian and you're not rubbing it in :-)

    Can you describe the fragrance?

Some clematis are what they call, Hawthorn scented/ to my nose they are almond scented, I wonder if it falls in this category?

hey everyone..I need to get that Clamitis!! I love it.

Robert, I love the Edwarthia smell. But it does not last long(

Th Jasmine is still in bloom...I LOVE it!

Nice plants everyone..Just outstanding...I too have had hardly any warm days and have yet to break 80..Depressing but it looks like I can finally turn the space heater off at night in the greenhouse and get some roses to open up..Sheesh. Looks like I will be pulling out the disease control stuff this year if this keeps up.

Now to surf the internet for that Clematis and the orchid..lol

True_blue i would not describe it as hawthorn although it is a really sweet kind of a smell! to me its hard to tie it down to a specific type. But i will compare it tomorrow as i have my hawthorn bonsai flowering at the moment :) Robert as you mention epiphyllum 'fruhlingsgold' every year i have just gone and ordered myself a unrooted cutting off ebay ;)

    hey guys!!

This is the year of forgotten bulbs!! Another bulb my bf got me 3 or 4 years ago for my nameday finally bloomed and the scent is exquisite!! Crinum 'Improved Peachblow' - I believe erubescens x album

..and this year I have the Iwanagara appleblossom too, Brian!

I'm so jealous!!!! There are no orchid shows in greece and I'm looking forward to rome's show each year...and every time hoping my bf doesn't tell me to stick it next year because he's bored reading his books on a bench gazing at rome while I am running around monte porzio catone like a maniac.. I might have to come up with another trip next year..maybe London's rhs show so I can visit my sister too, or Prague? Do any of you guys have a favourite show in europe??

We did love villa d'este near by though...

Fragrant...just a heads up these pop up on Ebay quite regularly. There are a few listed now and where I got mine from last year. Very slow growers...but the fragrance is much stronger than cordigera...which is another favorite.

    Loving all the photos!

Mike, thanks for the Edgeworthia update.

Brian, hope you like the epi's scent! It's a light refreshing scent that's best sniffed outside on a warm sunny afternoon.

Fenius, I just ordered a small bulb of Crinum 'Improved Peachblow' off of ebay thanks to your scent description. I'll have to wait years to sniff it. We're a bunch of enablers on this forum. Laugh.

My Brugmansia 'Rosalla' finally bloomed. Got it off Etsy I believe. Anyway it's not what it's supposed to be. I'm thinking I have another Charles Grimaldi on my hands. Oh, well. The price you pay for buying from individuals online.

Our Xena brug has been blooming but you have to reach up and pull a branch down to sniff the blooms. :)

fenius if you want all out plants i would say Rhs but if it is Orchids you are after i would try and give the Royal Three Counties Show, 17 - 19 June ago as it holds the
International Orchid Show where you can buy buy buy!! :) as well as that! it is a great day out so your other half should not get bored! There are classic cars, free food tasting, beer tasting, cloths market, farmers market, and more

    http://www.threecounties.co.uk/threecounties/options.php?id=103

blutayle thank you for the info about ebay but i am in the Uk so most American ebay sellers will not ship to the uk :(

Robert a lot of the info i have read online about fruhlingsgold say it is a citrus kind of smell would you agree with that?

The one I have was purchased with no identification so I'm really guessing from pics and the scent that mine is Fruhlingsgold but yes, the blooms smell similar to citrus blossoms. :)

Today since we had temps in 70's the smell of chilian night blooming jasmine is more wonderful and has notes of night blooming jasmine but less powerful. Finally sunshine after 20 days of rain. My jasmine nitidum is budding..YAY!!!!

    Trachelospermum wall is going.

And the carpentaria is somewhat fragrant.

The antirhinum hispanicum smells of lonicera.

A stray peony found its way into my yard. Quite fragrant although I wouldn't consistently describe the smell as pleasant; pungent, perhaps.

The cardiocrinum is about to open so more pictures will be forthcoming.

amazing stuff everyone - I tnink I need to go thru all the posts again to take notes!

Fragrant, your clematis is breaking my heart & then you rub it in with that ad! That is just too cruel haha

Fenius, I visited Villa d'Este back in 2009 and loved it. Italy is amazing.

Macranthos, I tried Trachelospermum one year & it didn't make it thru winter. Yours is very impressive! Wow. I've got a new wall available & wonder if I should try again

Maggie, it should easily be Hardy to 8a. Give it another go. Ours was old when we moved in 7 years ago so I had a head start... I did have to move it from the front yard to the back tho. Cistus nursery on sauvie island usually has quite a variety of interesting cultivars. I think they do mail order.

The cardiocrinum opened! This is my third one: the others were just not in the right places.

Trachelospermum asiaticum mandaianum bloomed today! Dar I loved the trachelospermum from peppers more than this one. I don't if it's my plant but the flower is smaller than from peppers. The fragrance smells similar to me so definitely both of them are related but different cultivar.

Your flowers are all beautiful everyone.

This is really motivating me to finish my planters.

I wonder if I have anything to share.

    last modified: 10 years ago

Turns out I have a few things.

Angel Face after a quick shower. Lovely citrusy smell that I adore.

And it's a surprisingly good cut flower.

Julia Child. Smells amazing to me. Like sweet black licorice tea, my favourite tea as a child. It's medicinal to my boyfriend though.

Stainless steel is more mauve than lavender this bloom. A little less fragrant in this weather. It seems to like heat.

Dauben looking and smelling beautiful in my container pond.

On the subject of lilies. I got a night blooming variety. Texas Shell Pink. My pond is technically too small and shady for it but I'm trying anyways. Dauben does well enough.

Not a very original combination of water lilies I know, Dauben and Texas Shell Pink. But I'm still excited.

After a month of adjusting, mainly making smaller pads due to lower light, it's finally sending up a bud.

Sorry for the terrible photo quality.

And that reminds me if my final fragrant thing.

I tried starting a few lotus seeds I found on the floor near a floral arrangement and one sprouted!

Hooray for water lilies! Please let us know your thoughts on the scent for Texas Shell Pink. I picked up Nymphaea 'Panama Pacific' at a local nursery and am trying it in a large pot. No flower buds yet but it is producing new leaves. It's supposed to be sweetly fragrant.

Came home from being gone a few days and got my first bloom of the year of Passiflora x bellotii. Love its scent.

It's been stormy here and the humidity has been high so of course the scents have been amazing in the garden especially at night. Yesterday evening we only had a few blooms open on the Cestrum nocturnum but could easily smell it several feet away. I've also been inhaling the intoxicating fragrance of Lonicera periclymenum 'Peaches and Cream'. Last night it smelled amazing. I've got this one by the back gate so it's easy to sniff but the other honeysuckles are too hard to reach to compare the scents.

    last modified: 10 years ago

I'll certainly get back to you.

I think I read is supposed to be cinnamon like. But I've also read it's "pungent".

    Watch me hate it lol.

I've seen Panama Pacific many times at my local nurseries (we get mainly tropicals here), and it looks beautiful.

I've never leaned in for a sniff. I'll have to.

They did get in a really cool selection of purple hardy lilies that I think were tropical/hardy hybrids, and a night blooming/day blooming cross that was very blue called Electric Indigo or something. I don't have the space or money for them though.

My night blooming lily takes nearly the whole pond. And my grandfather was keen on the idea of night blooming because Dauben is only open while he's at work.

I'm beginning to worry that my choice of night blooming lily was wrong. We had 4 "colours" to choose from. Red, pink, light pink, and white.

Kind wish I had gone with "red" or white.

I believe the varieties were Trudy Slocum for white, and Red Flare,

A bit of catching up to do. The garden is loving the warm weather.

Pittosporum heterophylum has heavy bloom & a very nice mock orange scent

And this smells like, well, mock orange:). Nothing beats the real thing. 'Virginal' is awesome.

I think 'Eden' is one of the most beautiful roses.

While wandering around the garden this morning I noticed our poor neglected and dying Jude the Obscure rose managed to produce a single bloom. We can't get enough of its fruity fragrance. It's a shame I'm no good with roses and don't give them the sun and space they need.

    Don't feel that bad Robert.

My roses don't get the sun and space they need either.

    Nothing does actually lol.

    Haha. True.

The sambac jasmines (Belle of India and Mysore Mulli) are starting to bloom. Just plucked some blossoms to enjoy their scent inside on this rainy day.

Yay! Jasmines finally :) My nitidum started blooming today!

    Yellow crossandra.

Had to share this little guy :)

    trachelospermum mandaianum
