Crossvine Help

I planted a Crossvine last Spring, but am unsure as to why it looks so helpless when it's already May. Does it appear to be struggling? Or normal? It's planted in full sun and in well-draining soil. Are these round balls the beginnings of new foliage? I'm still a fairly new gardener, so would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

You have new foliage growing along the top and right sides of the first photo, so it seems to be happy, just with a few of the last season's leaves looking a bit battered. That is perfectly normal. The "balls" are related to flowering, but I can't tell from the photo if they are from last season or are this year's flower buds getting ready to open.
