Black plastic plant tags work very well in woodland setting. The owner of a nearby woodland botanical garden uses just these with sticky clear labels printed at home. It looks really good. She got hers from England but Amazon also carries something similar.

If you just need a marker and not the name of the plant, you can use golf tees to mark plants so that you don't plant on top. I keep telling myself to do this each spring, and by the time I get around to it, many have disappeared for the summer. Then I end up planting on top of things. Ha, ha! At least cutting a Trillium rhizome just means two smaller plants the next year.

And people also use plastic knives, which can be written on and also come in black. If you don't have a device that prints labels, you can write on black with silver permanent marker. Have I done this? No, but many friends do. I am just always surprised each spring when things come up too close to each other. Ha, ha!

The black ones I found online are all T shaped, which shape is more likely to break off or get raked up. The plastic knives are what I used before, and they can't withstand cold temps, and break off after winter. Ditto the popsicle sticks I've been using.

The golf tees are an interesting idea. Those would be small. And those are painted so would resist rot. Thanks!

I make shrinky dink plant markers, and they hold up very well in these harsh New England winters.

Sadly, the squirrels seem to have dug up and eaten many if not 90% of what I planted. I can tell by the position of the holes pocked all over one region of the garden. I never did get around to marking them. I didn't know these were squirrel targets. I planted tulips at the same time, and those I protected with wire mesh pinned down. There went $ 80....

I will hope some made it and will come up later. I don't know when to expect them in their first year, though. The established red trillium I had before have emerged. New ones were giant white and also yellow trillium, as well as more red. Also dutchman's breeches.

Pests are THE most frustrating part of gardening.

Oh, so sorry Linnea..that is maddening....I gave up on bulbs & vegetables in the ground 2 years after moving in this house...the squirrels & the Bunnies....Oh, the mole/vole tracks drive my Mr. crazy...

But I admit I regularly feed the Chippies. I put their treats under the hostas by the back door for protection. water dish too.
