Design dilemma

Gas range in peninsula or exterior wall? Single story home with open, very high ceiling. Which option will allow best ventilation?

    1. DH likes peninsula concept but I'm worried that a hood would obstruct th
    2. bay view and not be very efficient. What is the minimum number of inches we should have on either side of stove. Stove will be a 30 in. LP Wolf. How many CFM's for vent?

Ideally, 36" vent hood. Three extra inches on each side of range top. As far as cfm for vent, it's a calculation based on the range top. I'm guessing, but with four burners, it should be between 600 cfm or 900 cfm.

Exterior wall with the hood at least 6" wider than the stove as well as the correct cfm, distance and depth for the stove top.

Planning on 36 in. vent. Leaning towards 900 cfm. I'm still wondering if there is a minimum number of inches that should be on either side of stove as work space.

Exterior every time over peninsula or island. It just looks so much better and functions so much better on an exterior wall. Trust us. :-)

Thanks for all of your input. Now I just have to convince non-cooking Hubs that reason and function should rule.

Re: space on either side of range, this is from this thread, which has all sorts of helpful information.

    • Cooktop/Range
      --
      If the range/cooktop is
against the wall, a minimum of 9" of counterspace b/w the wall (protected
by flame retardant material) and the range/cooktop.
-- If the range/cooktop is on
the end of a run that is open, a minimum of 18" of counterspace is needed
for both emergency landing space and a safety zone/buffer b/w the range/cooktop
      and end of the counter.
-- The other side of the
range/cooktop should have a minimum of 24" for both emergency landing
      space and workspace.
-- If the range/cooktop is in
an island or peninsula with no seating
      behind the range/cooktop
, then there should be a minimum of 18" b/w the
back of the range/cooktop and the back counter edge of the island/peninsula.
-- If the range/cooktop is in
an island or peninsula with seating
      behind the range/cooktop
, then there should be a minimum of 24" b/w
the back of the range/cooktop and the back counter edge of the
      island/peninsula.
-- Note: For functionality, at least 24" on each
side is better, regardless of location of cooktop/range. This space can be
shared with the Prep Zone on one side; if it is, then there should be at least 48"
(36" + 12") on the side shared with the Prep Zone.
-- Check your local Code. Some local Codes are more restrictive. If not, stick to these recommendations.

For either location I would have 18 in. on one side and over 44 in. + on the other. Thanks for the advise. I'll check CA. codes before we make a decision.
