They are incredibly sweet and fragrant when home grown. You can smell them when ripe from 20 feet away. So can the possums and raccoons who will eat every single bit of one. Protect them from critters when they become fragrant.

Congrats. Was it grown from a top, cutting or bought plsnt?

Pineapples are fun to grow from tops or cultures. I learned a lot the last few years and now mine are as large as store bought and sweeter.

Gnappi, I grew it from a top.

My neighbor gave me one that is already sprouting a pineapple and looks like the pic above. It's so cool! Can anyone link me to how to grow it from a top so I can try it myself, please?

@Violet - just plant the crowns and wait 1-2 years and voila - it will grow a pineapple. You can't kill them if you try. Your grocery store will give you all the tops you want.

Has anyone hear ever tasted a sugarloaf or one of the other local Hawaiian varieties? If so are they as good as I have heard?

Dg I never have but you r more north than me so you should,I just cover mine if it's going to freeze.

I've gotten about 15 out of the yard so far this year (from the size of a softball to just about the size you would find in stores) with at least 4 more still out there. I have a window full of tops waiting to be planted.
