Yes, island-mount hoods are often used in situations where a window or beam, or a rough wall finish (e.g. textured stone) would make the installation of a wall-mount hood difficult or impossible. Since an island hood is attached to the ceiling, it could be installed literally anywhere in the room. (We have even had a client install one over the dining room table, in addition to the hood above the range - to ventilate the cigar smoke from poker games!)

Regarding the hood design - Wolf hoods tend to be blocky & bulky, so if you're looking for a more geometric, slim profile, you'd have to consider a different manufacturer (and no, there's nothing wrong with mixing appliance brands - no single manufacturer excels in every single category).
