I just got my hand on my first fig tree (coll de dame) and its 4 or 5 years old and has been pruned for standard. At 6 foot tall including the pot, I really dont want it to get any taller, as it needs to be in a container for several more years to come. Its a long single trunk with a ball of new growth at the top. I understand I shouldnt prune till winter but should I be doing anything now to discourage higher growth? is there any way to encourage lower branches to form or is it way past that? Ive been researching all I can but advice is well appreciated. Wish I had been able to get a much younger tree to prune for my needs but Im so excited about the journey with my first fig! I can get a better picture in the morning.
